Cassia Moraes MPA-DP ’15 of Youth Climate Leaders

As CEO and partnerships lead at Youth Climate Leaders, Cassia Moraes MPA-DP ’15 is working to build the next generation of climate leaders through a unique around the world experience. Participants learn about climate change in theory, understand it in practice and work on hands-on projects with other young people, ultimately building a community of climate champions.

While at SIPA, she became interested in entrepreneurship and took classes to further that interest. She worked with an international NGO after SIPA, but it was only when she was actively looking for jobs again that she decided to launch her own organization: the Youth Climate Leaders (YCL). SIPA not only provided her a great education but a network that she still relies on at YCL.

As Cassia puts it: “SIPA is one of the best schools in the world which is empowering. You are so privileged to have this experience and, because of it, it is your duty to give back to the world what you learned.”

“What makes an ideal SIPA student?”

One question we get asked a lot as students and as program assistants in admissions is “What is the PERFECT SIPA student?” This is normally levied by applicants who are ready to mold themselves into whatever they need to go to guarantee admission.

Although we appreciate the passion, it is a hard question to answer! SIPA’s students come with such a wide variety of experiences — from theatre to investment banking — that there is no one way to characterize what the perfect Seeple is. Below are student stories that give some contact as to how wide the gamut spreads in backgrounds, career goals, and approach. 

George-Ann:

What skills did you come to SIPA with/aim to improve here?

I came to SIPA with some experience and knowledge in Economics and Economic research but not much of a policy background. In a lot of ways I was a jack of multiple small trades but truly a Master of none.  So, SIPA is where I came to add skill sets like policy expertise and formalized,non-academic writing to my repertoire and truly become a well-rounded individual. 

How do you think you signaled your unique worth as a potential Seeple?

Was it the fact that I, being extremely international, spelled colour with a “u” and said “learnt” rather than “learned”? Was it my quantitative experience? Who really knows. For me, a large part of my application was communicating both my worth as a student, a potential member of the student and student leader community, and a valuable alumna. 

What would you tell yourself if you were applying now?

The application reviewers are people too. Explain anything you think may be a weakness in your application and they’d be more than willing to take that into account. There’s no such thing as the “perfect” SIPA student but there is such a thing as a student for whom SIPA is the perfect school for. Communicate why you think SIPA is the one for you. 

Steven:

What skills did you come to SIPA with/aim to improve here?

I came to SIPA with the aim of improving my economic analysis and quantitative skills. During my undergraduate years, I took a couple of economics classes and liked them but was always scared to do more difficult economic courses. I came to SIPA to stop dodging economics and dive head-first into it. I also came to SIPA to learn about urban/housing policy a bit.

How do you think you signaled your unique worth as a potential Seeple?

Truth be told, I’m not sure. I just told SIPA who I was and the experiences I have had. Of course, I thought they were unique because I’m the person that is living them, but I wasn’t sure since SIPA gets loads of applications and there could have been someone with a similar background/story. I also spoke on how SIPA fit into my long-term plans.

What would you tell yourself if you were applying now?

Probably the same thing I told myself back then: Just be yourself. There were times I felt that I was unsure of myself, that I didn’t fit the SIPA profile. I ignored that idea and just applied. The backgrounds of people at SIPA vary so much that you will stand out and not even realize it.

Stuart:

What skills did you come to SIPA with/aim to improve here?

I came to SIPA to build some subject matter expertise in cyber policy as well as to generally improve my quantitative analysis skills. My undergraduate and professional experiences provided a strong background in international relations and national security, as well as strong writing skills. I didn’t, however, have a strong grounding in economics and quantitative analysis, nor did I have much experience in how technology and cybersecurity impacts the private sector.

How do you think you signaled your unique worth as a potential Seeple?

As everyone else has noted, you just never know. The community is so diverse here that there can be so many ways to stand out. The key thing I focused on was ensuring that my personal statement clearly explained my professional goals and how SIPA fit into that, as well as how I could contribute not only to academic life but to the community as well. I also carefully selected recommenders that could speak to different strengths (academic and professional) to provide the admissions committee with a holistic view.

What would you tell yourself if you were applying now?

I would tell myself to find mentors and friends to review my materials and point out my strengths and weaknesses. I did this when I applied, and it was so helpful to have a sounding board. You may be inclined to be too humble, or you may forget to mention an impressive part of your background, and a friend or mentor can point that out and help you articulate the things that may not be apparent on your resume or transcript.

Nabila:

What skills did you come to SIPA with/aim to improve here?

Like Steven, I came to SIPA to build my quantitative and economic analysis skills. I came to SIPA with stronger skills in writing and communications and wanted to complement that by building out my quant skills (even though it terrifies me!), as I felt that it put me at a disadvantage in the workplace. I also wanted to learn more about policy analysis and the intersection between technology and policy. 

How do you think you signaled your unique worth as a potential Seeple?

I have no idea! Maybe it was my work experience? Maybe my letters of recommendation? Maybe what I hope to accomplish post SIPA? In reality, it’s probably a combination of those things but to be honest, I have no idea but I’m grateful to be here! I hope it was the passion that they could sense from my personal essay but again, no clue…

What would you tell yourself if you were applying now?

Be you, be yourself and be honest about what you hope to accomplish. Those were the things I told myself when I was doing the application and that hasn’t changed because graduate school is an investment of both time and money so you want to be you! I’m not sure I have the “right” SIPA profile, but looking around at my classmates, we have such diverse backgrounds and experiences that I don’t think there is such as thing as the “right” or “ideal” SIPA student. 

UNANY Summer Scholars 2019 Winners

Our second-year MPA-DP ’20 students Fatène Ben-Hamza and Emily Boytinck were invited to the annual 2019 UN Day Humanitarian Awards Gala Dinner. The event commemorating the work of the United Nations has also became an elegant celebration of the work of our UNANY  Summer Scholars 2019 Winners.

Fatène Ben-Hamza spent her summer working at the UNICEF Middle East and North Africa Regional Office in the ADAP section (adolescent development and participation) in Amman, Jordan. During summer she focused on developing materials for improving the engagement of young people in humanitarian settings, an analysis of young people participation in social movements and finally on building a case for participatory budgeting in Jordan.

Emily Boytinck, had her summer placement at UNFPA country office in Dakar, Senegal. Under the authority of the Representative and the direct supervision of the Reproductive Health Program Officer, Emily worked with the reproductive health team to advance Senegal’s country program. As a UNANY Summer Scholar, she collaborated with office staff and national partners, and contributed to data collection, analysis and produce reports related to reproductive health (RH) with a focus on the topics of adolescent sexual and reproductive health and menstrual health in emergencies.

Emily’s and Fatène’s achievements while working in country offices located in Jordan and Senegal immeasurably added to a deeper appreciation of what UNFPA and UNICEF do towards a more just and sustainable future.

Why I Applied to SIPA – It All Started In High School

My path to studying at SIPA started from when I was a child. Growing up the Bronx, NY, I was surrounded by Spanish. I was fascinated by people speaking in a way that I did not understand. The sounds made me want to learn the language and its speakers. Once I entered 5th grade I began taking Spanish, and it was my favorite class. Having spent some of childhood in Jamaica and with my mother’s side of the family living there, I was traveling a good amount between Kingston and New York.

That Spanish class and the back-and-forth between countries began a love of other languages, cultures and traveling.

When I entered high school, I began to think what career path I would choose. My original plans included me becoming a forensic scientist or a occupational therapist. Teenage-Me liked solving mysteries and playing sports so I thought those professions would be fun (Adult-Me still likes those things). During freshman and sophomore year, I quickly learned that although I was good at Physics, Biology and Chemistry were not my strong suits. My less-than-stellar aptitude at the sciences dampened my scientist and therapist goals.

In my junior year, I was in a program that took high school students to Washington, D.C., to meet diplomats and Congressmembers to discuss diplomacy and national security. Meeting diplomats, learning about what they did and seeing how much they knew about the world left an impression on me. It was on this trip that I figured out I wanted to travel and learn more about the world. And the cherry on top, learning a language for work? I wanted to sign up immediately. Sadly you just can’t sign up for these kinds of positions.

From that point on in high school, I was researching undergraduate and graduate programs in international affairs focusing how to get into diplomacy. As my research into programs expanded, so did my interests in Latin America, which ended up as one of my undergraduate majors.

As I was leaving undergraduate, I was figuring out which field in international affairs I wanted to focus on. Economics had always interested me, but I always thought I was never good at quantitative/mathematical fields. After undergraduate, I spent some time working in the budgeting and finance in Boston. This experience helped me become more comfortable with the quantitative fields and pushed me to take the leap into studying economics.

When I was looking for programs, I wanted a broad one that had a strong economics background and IFEP won my heart. Also, the amount of course offerings at SIPA would allow me to learn about other policy fields. On top of this, with SIPA being in New York, I was able to come back home after living in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts for 10 years. I had missed the city.

#UNGA 2019 Roundup

The U.N. General Assembly 2019 was on the 23 – 27 September 2019. It was a busy week as world leaders gathered in New York City for the 74th session of the #UNGA. 

This U.N. General Assembly comes during heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, and a worsening humanitarian situation in Venezuela. The war in Yemen as well the U.S. peace plan for the Middle East are likely to make headlines as well. UNGA also occurred days after millions of young activists and their supporters marched in thousands of cities worldwide to demand greater action on climate change. 

Nevertheless, the UN General Assembly hosts a much watched debate of leaders each year, and here at SIPA, it is a busy week for students, faculty and alumni alike.From interning to attending sessions at the UN and on campus, here’s a snapshot of what our Seeples have been up to this week: 

Supporting the Chilean Delegation for the UNGA

Martina Majlis, MPA ‘20, worked for the Chilean Delegation, specifically with Chile’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Teodoro Ribera, for the duration of the UNGA. She helped push forward the Minister’s comprehensive agenda, focused on addressing bilateral matters, deepened trade relationships and confronted regional issues, such as the crisis in Venezuela.

Understanding the impact of public-private partnerships

Nayana Nagapurapu, MPA ‘20 and Victoria Zhang, MPA ‘20, attended “Advertising for Good,” an event organized by the Lion’s Share Initiative of the UNDP (where they previously interned!) that discussed how to effectively use advertising to improve biodiversity around the world. Speakers were from leading advertising firms like JCDecaux, Finch, and Mars Inc. They shared how as little as 0.5% of their ad spend helped save ecosystems in Sumatra and Africa. Nayana’s biggest takeaway? The Lion’s Share Initiative proved how impactful public-private partnerships can be.

Columbia University World Leaders Forum hosted a speaker on multilateralism and the rule of law

Amid backlash, Columbia University hosted Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia. President Lee Bollinger wrote that “public engagement can sometimes be difficult, even painful. But to abandon this activity would be to limit severely our capacity to understand and confront the world as it is, which is a central and utterly serious mission for any academic institution.” At the event, Tun Dr. Mahathir affirmed that affirmative action policy in Malaysia has helped many Malays succeed and prevented racial tensions, and he addressed regional cooperation. The event was widely attended by Seeples, including Perry Landesberg, MIA ‘20, Melissa Tan, MIA’ 19 and Nabila Hassan, MPA ‘20.

Learning about global governance from the NATO Secretary General

Perry Landesberg, MIA ‘20, attended NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s address to the Columbia community which focused on the maintenance of security in a changing world. Stoltenberg remarked on the disappointing state of NATO-Russian relations but concluded that NATO’s mission of security cooperation among democratic nations was as essential as ever. He answered audience questions on subjects such as Ukraine’s accession to NATO, the future of Afghanistan after NATO’s withdrawal, and NATO’s preparedness for cyber attacks. The event was part of the Blinken Lecture. 

Supporting the Digital Financing Task Force at UNGA

As part of the Digital Financing Task Force Secretariat, Ralph Chow, MPA ‘20, aided in the organization of a high-level Summit titled “Good Servant, Poor Master: Capturing the Promise and Managing the Risk of Financial Technology for a Sustainable World” during UNGA. The Summit was co-hosted by the Permanent Missions to the United Nations of the Republic of India and the Kingdom of Netherlands, and was co-sponsored by the MetLife Foundation. The Summit was well attended by representatives from Member States, the Private Sector, as well as United Nations agencies and other multilaterals.

A conversation on climate change, COP25 and artificial intelligence

Columbia SIPA’s Latin American Student Association – LASA hosted Minister Andres Cuove, Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation for Chile. Minister Cuove is the first Secretary of this recently launched ministry. Pablo Jorquera, MPA ‘20, Treasurer of LASA, reflected that Minister Cuove shared the challenges he faced to create the institution as well as his experience in the 2019 Climate Action Summit and his plans for COP25 in Santiago. He also explained how Chile is creating a policy in science and deciding priorities to use the STI for development.

Dreaming big at the African Women on Board [AWB]@UNGA event

George-Ann Ryan, MIA ‘20, and her fellow board members at the Sadie Collective were invited to attend the AWB@UNGA event where they rubbed shoulders with the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, Hon. Chief Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor and other distinguished group of leaders, innovators and dignitaries from around the world. George-Ann met Oby Ezekwesili, Founder of Bring Back Our Girls, a movement advocating for the speedy and effective search and rescue of all abducted girls by Boko Haram.

Georgian President Cites Dual-Nationality as Strength in Columbia Speech

President of Georgia (and Columbia alumnus) Salome Zourabichvili delivered a World Leaders Forum speech and explained her nation’s value to Europe as a cultural leader and a valuable testing ground for engagement with Russia. Perry Landesberg, MIA ‘20 reflects that President Salome Zourabichvili responded to students questions and she defended her government’s assistance to regional refugees and positions on breakaway regions. She also cited her personal history – having grown up in France and becoming a Georgian citizen in 2004 – as a strength in her previous career as a diplomat and foreign minister.

Learning about development and refugee resettlement from the President of Rwanda

On September 26, Shelina Noorali, MPA ‘20, had the opportunity to hear Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, speak about development, refugee resettlement, technological integration and environmental conversation in the country. Students had the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session with the President. The panel was moderated by the Dean of Columbia SIPA, Merit Janow.

Exploring digital transformation as a sustainable development pathway

Nabila Hassan, MPA ‘20 along with other Seeples attended UNDP’s ‘Digital Future of Development’ event which explored how digital technologies enable breakthrough solutions to achieve Sustainable Development Goals, how trailblazers across sectors are shaping the future of development, and how the UNDP is hoping to put technology at the forefront of its efforts.
