Katherine McGehee, MIA ’15, reflects on ASD 2015

Today, we’re sharing a blog post from our PA, Katherine McGehee, MIA ’15. She was one of our volunteers at this week’s open house, Admitted Students’ Day 2015. She served on the student panel, assisted students with registration, and chatted it up with newly-admitted students at the evening reception. Always on top of things, Katherine wanted to share her personal experiences from ASD, and how they compared to the decision many of our newly-admitted students are making right now. Here’s what she had to say:

Visit by former NAACP president is latest event in Dean’s Seminar Series in Race and Policy

When Benjamin Jealous was an undergraduate at Columbia 21 years ago, he said, there were nightly shootouts in Morningside Park.

The former president and CEO of the NAACP recalled celebrating a friend’s 21st birthday against that backdrop: The group toasted to surviving into adulthood.

“But I couldn’t bring myself to raise my glass,” said Jealous, impassioned. “The notion cut me like a knife that someone thought, in this country, that to simply survive past one’s 21st birthday… was an accomplishment.”

Our Office is Closed for Admitted Students’ Day

Today is SIPA’s annual open house, Admitted Students’ Day 2015, and we are incredibly excited to welcome our newly-admitted students to campus. Since we’re running around all day, our office is unfortunately closed. We will reopen tomorrow, Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 9:00 a.m, and will respond to your voicemails and emails as soon as we can.

A Note to Admitted Students

To everyone who’s had a difficult time reaching the Admissions Office, I want to personally apologize for our delay in responding to you. Since releasing admission decisions in March, we’ve received an overwhelming number of visitors, phone calls, voicemails and emails. We’re working on responding to everyone’s concerns in a timely manner, and I hope you’re able to wait it out just a little bit longer.

In the meantime, I wanted to recap some important blog posts you may have missed in recent weeks. As a newly-admitted student, I think you’ll find this information useful. Please review the links below for answers to many of your questions about submitting official transcripts, tracking your GRE scores, scholarship announcements, and more.
