In 2015, the Social Intervention Group established the Columbia University Community Collaborative Research Network (CCRN) to address barriers between researchers and the criminal justice involved community in order to promote health, forming a partnership with community corrections personnel, social service provider agencies and men and women who have been in the criminal justice system.
The CCRN works to strengthen community-researcher collaboration through training, education, research, and advocacy in order to inform and shape evidence-based, sustainable solutions to enable individuals, families, and communities to address HIV, violence, substance use, mental health, and other co-occurring issues.

Members of the CCRN, the Social Intervention Group’s Dr. Dawn Goddard-Eckrich, and Susan Poznyansky and the Family Center’s Vivian Presley, were selected after a competitive review process (only 12 teams across the United States are selected) to attend a week long intensive training in Community-based participatory research (CBPR) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. The training was hosted by the Detroit Urban Research Center that established the CBPR Partnership Academy.
Those selected for the Partnership Academy work in pairs of one community member and one academic researcher. To date, two-thirds of Academy participants have been people of color. The teams gain enhanced capabilities, knowledge, and skills for creating, implementing, and maintaining a successful CBPR partnership using innovative methods in the behavioral and social sciences to make a positive difference in the health and well-being of their local populations.

Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the CBPR Partnership Academy is a multi-faceted training and mentoring program designed for new community-academic partnerships that are interested in exploring and engaging in a CBPR approach to eliminate health inequities in their communities.
The Family Center and the Social Intervention Group at Columbia University School of Social Work will work together to address the challenges of justice involving individuals, families, and communities in New York City. Their partnership’s goal, which is aligned with their Community Collaborative Research Network’s mission, is to strengthen community-researcher collaboration through training, education, research, and advocacy in order to inform and shape evidence-based, sustainable solutions to HIV, violence, substance use, mental health, and other co-occurring issues.
