National Implementation of High Impact Couples-Based HIV Prevention and Treatment Adherence: ConnectHIP for Diverse Couples including MSM, Transgender and HIV Discordant

Description: This free webinar will present recent research findings on couples-based HIV prevention and retention in care in the US and focus on the ConnectHIP (High Impact Prevention) Intervention, an innovative, 3-session, couple-based intervention tailored to target the intersection of sexual risk behavior and substance use among racial/ethnic and sexual minorities, with the ultimate goal of providing an evidence-based HIV/STI prevention intervention that can be delivered in a variety of settings.

In the absence of a vaccine or cure for HIV infection, behavioral risk reduction and treatment adherence (HIV Testing Together, initiation of pre-exposure prophylaxis [PrEP] or post- exposure [PEP] for HIV negative persons or anti-retroviral treatment [ART] adherence for HIV positive persons) represents the best public health tools for prevention of HIV transmission. The Social Intervention Group (SIG) at the Columbia School of Social Work (CSSW) funded by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in partnership with DHL Danya Inc. adapted and is disseminating ConnectHIP, for African American men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender, HIV discordant and substance using couples. This webinar will introduce ConnectHIP with new content and high definition video models of up-to-date biomedical HIV and other STI prevention options, care linkages and adherence strategies along with cognitive- behavioral skills for couples at highest risk for HIV. This seminar will also discuss organizational strategies for implementing ConnectHIP.

Learning Objectives: As a result of participating in this webinar, you will be able to:

  1. Understand the current evidence-base of for couples-based HIV/STI prevention in the US;
  2. Understanding intersecting factors that impact risk and resiliency of sexual and racial minorities;
  3. Identify and describe core components of ConnectHIP; and
  4. Identify structural and organizational factors that may facilitate or impede the implementation of ConnectHIP and the resources to support implementation.

Presented by:
elwinDr. Elwin Wu is an Associate Director of the CSSW Social Intervention Group and the Co- Director of the HIV Intervention Science Training Program for Racial/Ethnic Minority New Investigators. His practice experience includes direct clinical practice with individuals, couples, and groups with agencies serving primarily the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities; evaluation of violence prevention programs for perpetrators of intimate partner violence in same-sex relationships; and program development and evaluation for criminal justice-involved adolescents and adults.
Dr. Wu’s research primarily consists of prevention and intervention research that focuses on offenders—defined as those whose behaviors place others at risk for health and psychosocial problems—residing at the nexus of drug abuse, partner violence, and HIV. Dr. Wu has also recently embarked upon empirical investigations into factors and experiences that affect the professional trajectory of up-and-coming racial/ethnic minority researchers interested in applied sociobehavioral science to address and redress health disparities.

timTimothy Hunt has been working in substance abuse treatment, HIV prevention and care for over 29 years. His research areas include: 1) designing, testing and disseminating HIV/STI prevention interventions, 2) studying the effectiveness of capacity building strategies and methods to support evidence-based HIV preventions; and 3) the adaptation and translation of evidence-based interventions aimed at reducing harm due to addiction to alcohol, tobacco and other substance related health risks. As Director of Training and Capacity building and investigator with the Social Intervention Group (SIG) and the Global Health Research Center of Central Asia (GHRRCA), he has trained over 9,000 healthcare providers in behavioral interventions in the US, Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East. He directed this national adaptation and dissemination of couples-based prevention with CONNECT HIP, and also served co-investigator on the E- WORTH, PACT and BRIDGE intervention studies funded by NIDA for HIV prevention with populations formerly incarcerated, on probation and parole. As a master trainer with the CDC of the WORTH, CONNECT HIP, Social Networks Strategy and ARTAS case management interventions, he is committed to better understanding the factors that support successful implementation of behavioral interventions.
