Columbia Linguistics was well-represented at this year’s Linguistic Society of America (LSA) Summer Institute!

The LSA Summer Institute, held biennially, brings together linguists of all levels and stripes for a month-long program of courses, lectures, workshops, and social events. This year’s institute was hosted by the University of Oregon in the scenic Willamette Valley.
Columbia students took a variety of classes, including student favorites “Grammatical Description for Language Documentation,” taught by Thomas E. Payne, “Iconicity in Language” with Bodo Winter, and “Linguistics and Reading Reform” with Mark Seidenberg.
Our very own John Prado (SPS ’26; pictured below) was awarded third place at the institute’s Poster Session for his work on conjunction and discourse structure in Cherokee!

Other events of note for our students were the Himalayan Languages Symposium, Symposium on Northwest American Indigenous Languages, Linguistics for Justice, and Society for Computation in Linguistics.
