After a late night at The Blue Moon Saloon, the gang had a bit of slow morning, but still managed to arrive to the work site promptly at 9am. This of course, wasn’t good enough to beat the Ohio State crew, who seriously must be getting up at like 6am.
As usual, we split off into our teams. I’ve been working with Merengue Meghana and Egg white Evan (of Ohio St.) with Brandy, a Lafayette Habitat employee who makes sure we don’t knock the house down. Yesterday, our team finished siding all of the walls of the house flawlessly, so today we split up and joined a new group. We worked on putting up siding on the gables (the triangular parts of the house). We worked with the Gable Girls, an elite group of Buckeyes who expertly install siding onto gables. It was pretty exciting when they welcomed us to their scaffold parties and told us we could one day be more than just Gable Guests (#rushgablegirls).
After a productive morning, we had a lunch of salad, hot dogs, fruit salad, and the usual junk food snacks like cookies and chips. This lunch was provided by another friendly neighbor who wanted to support Habitat’s work (shout out to Ms. Pat).

During the afternoon, Meghana and I helped the Gable Girls with the siding, Oliver and Smita (and Sirloin Sarah) put up plywood in the shed of a second house, Natachi helped put up some doors and under-roof-cover-thingys, and Kim spackled and caulked.
Another fun thing that’s happening during this trip (that I don’t think has been mentioned yet on this blog) is that Smita is creating a video to advertise for the Habitat ReStore! The ReStore is an awesome place where people donate household items for free and then the ReStore sells those items at a price. 100% of the profits go to Habitat and materials for building Habitat homes. So Smita spent a lot of the day working on that!
After the build, we picked up Smita and headed home, but not before dropping by the Raging Cajun clothing store. A few t-shirts and candy bars later, we made it home and took showers.
At 6pm, we had dinner with the Habitat crew, future homeowners, and Ohio State team at Bon Temps Grill. We rolled in a casual 15 minutes late and it definitely wasn’t partially because Oliver took a wrong turn on the way (something he forbid me from writing about in the blog post).
Dinner was delicious; the crawfish pot pie and the alligator BBQ earned rave reviews. The Ohio State crew is hilarious and super friendly. We’ve made some really good friends.
After dinner, we drove to Borden’s for ice cream with the Ohio State crew. The car ride over was hilarious fully due to Kim, whose comedy career will be blowing up any minute now. Ice cream was absolutely delicious. Smita and I decided to share a cone that was way too monstrous for us, but it was soo good. Literally the best ice cream. As Meghana’s mom says, we enjoyed some calorie time.
Today was a long and tiring day, but a good one. It’s only 10 and the crew is already mostly in bed. We’re all exhausted, but still looking forward to one last day of work tomorrow!
