March 14 – BUILD DAY ONE LET’S GO TEAM

Today was Day One on the build!

We arrived at the build site at 9 am, kinda breathless from sprinting out of the house. So many great people from the Lafayette chapter were there! We got to meet Joelle, the Volunteer Services Director, Sam, the Communications Director, and Melinda, the Executive Director. The future homeowner of the house we were building was also there! They were all very kind and welcoming, which made the morning a preeetty solid start to the day.

We were working on the house with a team of about 20 students from Ohio State University. They were good fellow teammates, which was wonderful – a trait which can be attributed to their overwhelming school spirit. They told us about their rivalry with the University of Michigan; explained to us that this rivalry extended to “the whole state of Michigan;” taught us a number of OSU chants; listed the number of games they went to; and (my personal favorite) made us realize that we don’t shout anything at people we see wearing Columbia gear. I kind of wish we did. Imagine!

We were working on finishing the exterior of the house. We worked on building the trim for the house which was super cool – my woodshop skills from Sculpture classes came in really handy. Once, we messed up a cut and I fixed it by slicing off about a millimeter of wood on the table saw. What precision! I was very impressed with myself. I was primarily working alongside Oliver (fellow Columbian) and Sarah (OSU friend). We did really well with the porch we were working on. I am proud. Yes. Yes, indeed.

For lunch, we ate jambalaya. And pie! Because today is ~*pi day*~ (hooray for math holidays). We finished building at around 3:30 pm and cleaned up until 4 pm. At 4 pm, we came home and took a much needed break. Everyone was very hot and pretty exhausted.

For dinner, Meghana and Oliver made a very delicious Thai dish! They made red curry with chicken and rice. I instagrammed a picture of the food they made because it was so impressive. We had dinner fairly early, and then took it easy the rest of the evening. Some friends have been reading, some have been writing [blog posts], and others have sleeping. Some have been falling asleep while reading.

The usual kinda thing you’d expect after a long day of work.

That said, I’m pretty tired.
I think I’m going to head to bed real soon.

But! Before I go, I will close out with one of the charming little OSU spirit songs we learned from our new friends:

(Read to the tune of Do Your Ears Hang Low)
“Ohhhhhhhhh
We don’t give a d*mn about the whole state of Michigan
We don’t give a d*mn about the whole state of Michigan
We don’t give a d*mn about the whole state of Michigan
Cuz we’re from O-HI-O!”

(like i said, v spirited)
