Each semester during the regular academic year, Columbia offers instruction in Dutch language and literature, including courses for beginning, intermediate and advanced students as well as those interested in acquiring the skills necessary to read early modern texts. The courses are offered for academic credit through the Department of Germanic languages. Please see the Directory of Classes for the current schedule.
The newsletter of the Nederlandse Taalunie recently featured a photo of one of our classrooms of Dutch instruction in this article.
Beginning in fall 2013, Columbia’s Language Resource Center is participating in a pilot distance learning program along with Yale University and Cornell University, to teach some of the more rarely taught languages cooperatively through video-conferencing, (the “Shared Course Initiative”). Our “Advanced Dutch” sequence has been selected to participate in the program. Thus, students at Yale and Cornell can take this course together with Columbia students through video-conferencing under the instruction of Wijnie de Groot.
