During the regular academic year, Columbia hosts a number of events devoted to exploring the political affairs, culture, society, or language and literature of he Dutch-speaking world. Some are lectures or round-table discussions to which the general public, as well as members of the university communities in New York, are invited. Others are seminars that introduce our students to the new scholarship on the culture and history of the Dutch-speaking world, and these too are typically open to guests from other universities or the region. Still others are small conferences of one or two days to which we invite specialists from other parts of the United States and abroad as well as students, graduate and undergraduate, from Columbia and nearby institutions. Our visiting professors play a major role in organizing these events, and each year’s program is thus partially devoted to issues of particular interest to our visitor and the students or colleagues with whom he or she has worked during the stay at Columbia.
