I applied to Columbia thrice. Once after undergrad, I was on the waitlist but never made it off the list. Again, in 2020, where I was rejected. And finally last year, when I received my acceptance. Columbia was my dream school for many reasons, including being able to live the artist’s dream in my dream city, the program, and various other factors. I was always known as the studious one in my family, so it came to no surprise to people that I was going to continue my education and get my MFA. But what folxs didn’t realize was the blood, sweat, and tears (no joke) that came with being able to work towards making my dreams come true. Some challenges of being at Columbia are getting acclimated to the environment academically, socially, and culturally. This institution isn’t made for people with similar backgrounds and stories like me, but finding my people and getting over imposter syndrome has been rewarding and therapeutic. Being able to take charge of my educational and avocational interests has given me a lot of joy because I am do what is best for myself, my future goals, and for my communities.
