Michael Berryhill (b. 1972 El Paso, TX) received his BFA from the University of Texas at Austin and his MFA from Columbia University, New York; he attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2007. Recent exhibitions include Lulu, Mexico City; Fredericks & Freiser, New York; Jeff Bailey Gallery, New York; Anonymous Gallery, Mexico City; KANSAS, New York; Steven Zevitas Gallery, Boston; New Britain Museum of American Art, Connecticut; Blütenweiss Gallery, Berlin; Okay Mountain and Arthouse, Austin; David Shelton Gallery, Houston; Vox Populi, Philadelphia; Bull and Ram, New York; David Castillo, Miami and Participant Inc., New York. Thursday April 7th: David Salle

David Salle helped define the post-modern sensibility by combining figuration with an extremely varied pictorial language. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at museums and galleries worldwide, including the Whitney Museum; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; MoMA Vienna; Menil Collection, Houston; Haus der Kunst, Munich; Tel Aviv Museum of Art; Castello di Rivoli; and the Guggenheim, Bilbao.

Although known primarily as a painter, Salle’s work grows out of a long-standing involvement with performance. Over the last 25 years he has worked extensively with choreographer Karole Armitage, creating sets and costumes for many of her ballets and operas. Their collaborations have been staged at venues throughout Europe and America, including The Metropolitan Opera House; The Paris Opera; The Opera Comique; Lyon Opera; Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Opera Deutsche, Berlin. In 1995, Salle directed the feature film Search and Destroy, starring Griffin Dunne and Christopher Walken.
Salle is also a prolific writer on art. His essays and interviews have appeared in Artforum, Art in America, Modern Painters, The Paris Review, and Arts Magazine, as well as numerous exhibition catalogs and anthologies. He is a regular contributor for Town & Country Magazine. How to See, a volume of Salle’s collected essays, will be published by W.W. Norton in Fall, 2016.

Tuesday March 1st: Lisa Sigal

Lisa Sigal have been painting on walls and making forms that combine painting with architecture. Utilizing this practice and expanding upon notions of space, her work investigates how art can challenge set ideas about property, structure, containment and freedom. Home Court Crawl, her Prospect 3 New Orleans biennial project was the inspiration for Blights Out, a collaborative and creative model for development that unites art, architecture, and organizing to share the tools for New Orleans residents to build the destinies of their own neighborhoods.

Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at The Whitney Museum’s Biennial 2008, The New Museum, MoMa/PS1 Museum, The Sculpture Center, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, The Albright Knox , the Brooklyn Museum, Prospect .3 International Biennial in New Orleans, the DeCordova Museum in Boston, the Essl Museum in Vienna, LAXART space in Los Angeles, Samson Projects in Boston among other venues. Sigal’s work is currently on view at The Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh thru the summer of 2016. She is a 2012 Art Matters Foundation grantee and Creative Capital grantee, a 2011 Guggenheim Fellowship awardee, a 2002 NYFA grantee and received the Joan MItchell Foundation Grant and the Elizabeth Foundation Grant in 1998. She received a BFA from the Tyler School of Art in 1985 and an MFA from the Yale School of Art in 1989. Sigal is currently co‐curating Open Sessions, at The Drawing Center. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Tuesday January 26th: Alfredo Jaar

Alfredo Jaar is an artist, architect, and filmmaker who lives and works in New York City. He was born in Santiago de Chile.

Jaar’s work has been shown extensively around the world. He has participated in the Biennales of Venice (1986, 2007, 2009, 2013), Sao Paulo (1987, 1989, 2010) as well as Documenta in Kassel (1987, 2002). Important individual exhibitions include The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Whitechapel, London; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome; and Moderna Museet, Stockholm. A major retrospective of his work took place in summer 2012 at three institutions in Berlin: Berlinische Galerie, Neue Gesellschaft fur bildende Kunst e.V. and Alte Nationalgalerie. In 2014 the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki hosted the most extensive retrospective of his career.

Jaar has realized more than sixty public interventions around the world. More than fifty monographic publications have been published about his work.

He became a Guggenheim Fellow in 1985 and a MacArthur Fellow in 2000.

His work can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art and Guggenheim Museum, New York, the MCA in Chicago, MOCA and LACMA in Los Angeles, the Tate in London, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Centro Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlaebeck and dozens of other institutions and private collections worldwide.

Tuesday December 8th: Helen Verhoeven

Helen Verhoeven received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1996, an MFA from the New York Academy of Art  in 2001. Verhoeven’s work explore the theme of ceremonial gatherings. Her work also conjures themes of burlesque, largely of the Weimar period. Verhoeven was an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam from 2005-2006, and 2010 was the winner of the Wolvecamp Award. Selected exhibitions include Wallspace Gallery in New York, Galerie Fons Welters in Amsterdam, Sammlung Essl in Vienna, the Living Art Museum in Reykjavik and the Zimmer Museum in Los Angeles. She is represented by Wallspace Gallery in New York. Helen Verhoeven lives and works in Brooklyn and Amsterdam.

Tuesday October 27th: Dana Schutz

Dana Schutz was born in 1976 in Livonia, Michigan. She received her BFA at the Cleveland Institute Art and her MFA at Columbia University in 2002. Schutz’s fictive subjects have ranged from people who can eat themselves, a gravity fanatic, imaginary births and deaths, and public/private performers. She has been the subject of museum exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Most recently, a survey exhibition of her work at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montreal opened on October 17, 2015.  Her solo museum shows include, The Hepworth Wakefield, Yorkshire; kestnergesellschaft, Hannover; The Neuberger Museum, Purchase; Miami Art Museum, Miami; the Denver Art Museum and the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver; Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin, the Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto, Italy, The Rose Museum, Massachusetts, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas. Dana Schutz lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She is represented by Petzel Gallery in New York and Contemporary Fine Arts in Berlin.

Tuesday September 15th: Jon Kessler & Sanford Biggers

Jon Kessler was born in Yonkers, New York in 1957. After receiving his BFA at SUNY Purchase in 1980 he participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program. Since that time he has maintained his studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

His first exhibition was at Artist’s Space in 1983. Since that time he has exhibited widely in galleries and museums in the United States, Europe and Asia. A retrospective of his work ”Jon Kessler’s Asia” was mounted at the Kestner-Gesselshaft in Hannover, Germany in 1994 and traveled throughout Europe. His exhibition, “The Palace at 4 AM”, began at MoMA PS1 in 2005 and travelled to the Sammlung Falckenberg in Hamburg, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen and ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. His recent exhibition “The Web” at Swiss Institute and Museum Tinguely explored the connection between bodily movement and technical apparatus, deploying mechanisms, live video and an iPhone app to facilitate this relationship.

His works are in many public collections including The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art and MOCA. He is a Professor in the Visual Arts Division of Columbia University’s School of the Arts where he has taught since 1994. He plays guitar in several art rock bands.

Sanford Biggers interdisciplinary artistic practice integrates film/video, installation, sculpture, painting, original music and performance. He intentionally complicate issues such as hip hop, Buddhism, politics, identity, high vs vernacular culture, American history and art history through the use of loaded materials and references and evocative modes of display. His work opens viewers to new perspectives and associations to established symbols and histories while remaining dedicated to formal concerns. Sanford makes objects, images and sound oriented “vignettes” that strive to be as aesthetically engaging as they are conceptual.
