All good things must come to an end

Last week left a web of tangled, sweet and sour feelings in me. It was incredibly happy and emotional, but certainly sad, as we, class of 2013, leave behind our beloved International Affairs Building to conquer our dreams around the world. Loving family members flew from places as Japan, Chile, New Jersey and California to proudly see their sons and daughters, their sisters, nephews, brothers and spouses walk down the graduation aisle and shake Dean Robert Lieberman’s hand to receive a degree from one of the best educational institutions in the world. But much beyond that, they came to cheer for us, to share with their friends our great accomplishments, and to take a small peak of what SIPA and Columbia leave us with. Their satisfaction, I dare to say, was immense.

mcgrad13Seeing all those smiles around campus, all those proud faces, and even the picture-taking-mania made me realize once again how lucky I am.  I’ve had some of the best years of my life during my time at SIPA. I’ve build truly rewarding friendships; with people dear to my heart that I know will remain part of it in the years to come.  I have worked in Kenya, traveled for research to Peru, and discovered the endless, fascinating corners of New York. I’ve had innumerable amounts of beer, all shared with people I feel somehow I was destined to meet. I’ve learned countless new things from the most talented academics in their field. From how to implement a public health nutrition intervention to the impact of colonialism in African development, I have learned to better understand and address the complex development challenges of our world. And this might sound as the typical cheesy phrase us development nerds might be tempted to include on our LinkedIn profiles, but I truly mean it. Today, even those long nights in the library, reading and writing frenetically before a midnight deadline, have lost their sour taste.

mcgrad13cThey say our minds are wise enough to recolor our memories and keep more of the good ones on the surface. Maybe I am under this colorblind effect right now, but I just feel immensely happy and grateful to this school, this university, and above all, to those that so proudly cheered for us last Thursday. Today, sitting among boxes while I pack up my university-housing apartment, the only thing I can say is thank you SIPA, you will be deeply missed. And for those of you getting ready to start this new adventure soon, (with a little bit of envy), rest, take care of your liver and your brains, and prepare to truly enjoy the years to come.

In the “spirit” of graduation

You already know that SIPA students work hard, but did you know that we play hard too? SIPA students enjoy our cocktails (in moderation, of course) so when the admissions staff asked me to write a lighthearted post to celebrate our graduation this week.  I created these signature cocktails based on SIPA’s concentrations.

Urban & Social Policy (USP) – a SIPA Manhattan

Inspired by the best city in world, with some international flavor.

3/4 oz Martini and Rossi sweet vermouth (Italian)

2 1/2 oz Mogul Monarch Indian Whiskey

1 dash Angostura® bitters (Invented in Venezuela, manufactured in Trinidad and Tobago)

1 maraschino cherry

1 twist orange peel

Human Rights (HR) – This drink is a modified version of a cocktail known as a Genocide. (The things I google for this blog.) Besides having a terribly offensive name, the drink sounds disgusting. I changed some ingredients to mitigate the awfulness of the genocide, which is what our HR concentrators do!

2 oz. Vodka

2 oz. Cherry brandy

2 oz. Amaretto Di Saronno

2 oz. White rum

fill With Lemon/Lime Soda

To Taste Sour mix

Energy and Environment (EE)

Red Bull (Energy) and Gin (Botanical for the Environment)

Proportions to taste.

Economic & Political Development (EPD) –  Shooter, modified version of a Southern Palm

.2 oz Everclear

.4 oz Peppermint Schnapps

.4 oz Drambuie Liqueur

International Security Policy (ISP) – This is actually really good, it tastes like a peach Jolly Ranger

Ice

Seagram’s Gin

Peach Schnapps

Add club soda to taste

International Finance and Economic Policy (IFEP) –  Also known as a glitter bomb. I thought a cocktail based around a Swiss liquor with flakes of gold in it was fitting for our finance friends. Plus the energy drink can help you stay up all night studying advanced econ!

A single shot of Goldschlagger dropped into a glass of Red Bull.

Please enjoy your concentration responsibly and congratulations to all my classmates!

SIPA 2013 Graduation

It’s a very exciting time of year again. People from around the world arrive on the Columbia University campus this week to celebrate with their friends and family at Commencement.

President Lee C. Bollinger will give the University Commencement address on Wednesday, May 22nd.  Each individual school will also feature a commencement speaker at their graduation ceremonies.

georgeSIPA will feature George Stephanopoulos, CC’82 as the 2013 graduation speaker on Thursday, May 23.  He served as a political advisor and taught at Columbia & SIPA after leaving the Clinton Administration in 1996. Today Stephanopoulos is best known as a co-anchor of Good Morning America, host of This Week with George Stephanopoulos and chief political correspondent and co-anchor of special events for the ABC network.

You may watch the SIPA graduation live on Thursday starting at 10:45 am EDT.
