Katherine McGehee, MIA ’15, reflects on ASD 2015

Today, we’re sharing a blog post from our PA, Katherine McGehee, MIA ’15. She was one of our volunteers at this week’s open house, Admitted Students’ Day 2015. She served on the student panel, assisted students with registration, and chatted it up with newly-admitted students at the evening reception. Always on top of things, Katherine wanted to share her personal experiences from ASD, and how they compared to the decision many of our newly-admitted students are making right now. New Sexual Respect Education Program, Research Initiative at Columbia University

I’m sure some of you have read the news this year related to sexual assault on university campuses across the country. So I feel it’s important to share with all of you a new awareness initiative on campus requiring all Columbia students to participate in new programming as part of their degree requirements (from workshops and films to group reflections and panel discussions).

As SIPA Dean Merit E. Janow put it, “Columbia University is undertaking a major initiative to explore the ethics around sexual respect, one that encourages everyone to reflect on what it means to be a citizen of our Columbia community. At Columbia and around the country, issues around sexual assault and harassment, dating and intimate partner violence, and stalking are being examined in robust and challenging ways.”

SIPA Love Stories: The Newest Connections

As promised, we’re wrapping up the SIPA Love Stories mini-series with alumni love stories submitted last week. It’s been an emotional ride reliving Seeple’s relationships. I hope this series gave you some additional insight into the program, and the student life offerings on campus. But most of all, I hope it reminded you to be kind to one another and to always look for the good in people. This may have been a romantic series for the United States’ Valentine’s Day holiday, but the message of love can be received in any form.
