Welcome to the new blog!

The pictures are bigger. The colors are brighter. The layout is more responsive. It’s the Admissions Blog of your dreams!

Welcome to the new blog. I hope you’re as thrilled with our redesign as we all are. If you’ll recall the old blog, it was stagnantly old-school looking. Nobody liked it, and that’s understandable. So we changed it! (Drag the arrows in the image below to see the before and after makeover!)

As you take a look around at the new SIPA MIA/MPA Admissions Blog, I hope that it reminds you of a site you already enjoy. I decided to mimic the look of the SIPA website—similar fonts, a featured-content slider, and a user-friendly navigation menu.

At the top of the page, you’ll see our navigation menu. Under About This Blog, you’ll find our mission statement, and a list of contributors. We also link you back to the Application Page via Important Links and Apply Now. And if you’re interested in reading more about a particular subject, just send us an email via Submit An Idea. I’ll personally get the request, and will be sure to put your inquiry in our top-priority list.

On the right-hand side of most pages, you’ll notice Upcoming Deadlines, Recent Posts, and even our Instagram account (!), which will help keep you informed on important reminders and content related to the admissions process.

And if you ever forget our email address or physical address, just scroll to the bottom on any page to quickly reference our contact information.

screenshot-subscribebarOh, and please make sure you subscribe to the new blog by entering your email address in the Subscribe bar on the right-hand side. (If you received this post in an email, then you don’t have to re-subscribe.) Since it’s technically a new blog, we’re using a new subscription service. Thus, to stay informed on upcoming events, student life, and the admissions process, don’t forget to subscribe today!

I look forward to bringing you some exciting content this summer. If you have any comments about the new blog, please feel free to Submit An Idea.

John Olderman, MPA ’16, selected as CBC Public Policy Fellow

Congratulations to John Olderman, MPA ’16, recently selected as a 2015-16 Citizens Budget Commission Public Policy Fellow. The paid fellowship will give the International Finance and Economic Policy concentrator an opportunity to conduct in-depth research and produce a final report on a certain type of post-employment benefits.

“I’m really excited about this,” Olderman told SIPA News. “It’s an opportunity for me to learn about a really important issue that I’m currently not an expert in, and give back to the New York City community in a positive way.” Read More →

Rashid Dar, MIA ’15, develops prayer app for Muslims

Rashid Dar, MIA ’15, who’s concentrating in Economic and Political Development, recently developed a free iOS and Android app, called Musallah (which means “a space for prayer” in Arabic). Musallah makes it easier to find a prayer spot on the go, by mapping out nearby prayer areas for app users. Read why he created the app in an excerpt from The Muslim Observer:

“It starts to feel less like a blessing and more of a burden,” he tells Muslim Observer. “At times I’ve prayed in the dressing rooms of H.M. with music blasting everywhere and a mirror directly in front of me and I can’t tell you my heart is entirely into that prayer. Essentially what I’m doing is discharging an obligation and not getting as much out of it.”

Routinely experiencing these kinds of uncomfortable scenarios and tired of not giving prayer its due importance helped give birth to the idea of Musallah. “A thought hit me: we all have smartphones these days, so why couldn’t we use them to crowd-source musallahs for Muslims everywhere?”

Grab a glass for Raising The Bar NYC

Starting today, you may RSVP to attend a networking/mini-series event in NYC, known as Raising the Bar. Raising the Bar is a worldwide initiative aimed at making education a part of a city’s popular culture. We create one of a kind, knowledge-driven events in unusual locations. Our goal is to raise the bar on the content people consume in their everyday lives. We want to constantly be inspired, inside and outside of the classroom. That’s why we decided to bring the city’s brightest minds to the last place you would expect them: in your neighborhood bar. So grab a drink and come learn how to build a spaceship.

Six of SIPA’s brightest minds are participating in this edition of Raising the Bar. Each professor has something unique to contribute to the international affairs and public policy conversation. More information on each lecturer and their presentations are below.   Read More →
