Q&A: Lydia Tomkiw, MIA’15

Student discusses upcoming Google Journalism Fellowship, press freedom, and her work in Ukraine and elsewhere

California native Lydia Tomkiw MIA’15, who is concentrating in Economic and Political Development, was recently awarded a Google Journalism Fellowship for 2015. One of 11 recipients nationwide, she’ll spend 10 weeks this summer working with the Committee to Protect Journalists to consider the use of technology in journalism and in protecting press freedom and journalists.

Tomkiw sat down with SIPA News to discuss her fellowship, her previous work in Ukraine and elsewhere, and more.

Today, I’m sharing with you a post by another one of our Program Assistants, Lauren Podber, MIA ’15. Lauren is a five-year dual-degree student with Columbia University’s School of General Studies, and her focus has been in International Security Policy, with a specialization in the Middle East. She wanted to share with you two of the opportunities you’ll have as a SIPA student: the opportunity to take coursework in fields you’re passionate about, and the opportunity to pursue a career in your chosen concentration. Choose SIPA for the United Nations Studies Working Group, says Camilo Lizarralde, MIA ’15

Everyone here at the Admissions Office knows that many of our newly-admitted students are still torn between enrolling at SIPA or another public policy program this upcoming fall. With enrollment deadlines looming, I wanted to share with you a post by one of our Admissions Ambassadors, Camilo Lizarralde. Camilo, MIA ’15, is in the International Security Policy concentration and United Nations specialization. Since many of you are interested in SIPA’s ties with the United Nations, I thought Camilo’s story was pertinent to share. As one of the first UN Studies specializers, he has a lot of passion for SIPA and its connection to the United Nations. Here’s why Camilo chose SIPA.
