The New York Botanical Garden
The Humanities Institute
Junior Fellowship Program
Summer 2015
The Humanities Institute, a division within the LuEsther T. Mertz Library at The New York Botanical Garden, is pleased to announce a Junior Fellowship Program, supported by The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation.
To respond to the growing interest in the Humanities Institute at the academic undergraduate and graduate level, the Humanities Institute—LuEsther T.Mertz Library offers two Junior Fellowships for advanced undergraduate and graduate students during the summer of 2015. Through this program, emerging scholars can explore the significance of interdisciplinary humanities studies at a premier plant science center. Junior Fellows will conduct research and receive access to the Mertz Library’s world-renowned holdings, related to the history of botany, garden art and architecture, landscape and urban design, botanical illustration, and the book-arts, from the Middle Ages to the present.
Purpose
The Junior Fellow will create a scholarly research paper highlighting a specific theme or group of rare works in the Mertz Library Collections and related resources. A Junior Fellowship at the Humanities Institute also will involve participation in the Institute’s programs, including symposia and colloquia and other public outreach activities.
The Junior Fellowship Program provides a unique opportunity for emerging scholars to conduct their own research, while accessing the historical collections available in the Garden’s research facilities—the Mertz Library, the Archives, the William and Lynda Steere Herbarium, and the Living Collections of The New York Botanical Garden.
Eligibility:
Advanced undergraduate or graduate student, who has a distinct interest in pursuing interdisciplinary research while in residence of one of the world’s foremost cultural institutions and plant research centers.
Tenure of fellowship: June-August 2015; exact dates to be determined in consultation with the applicant and program coordinator.
Stipend awarded: $2,000
