Data Analysis and Mining at Our Finger Tips

“The goal is to turn data into information and information into insight.”
– Carly Fiorina, former CEO, Hewlett Packard

Data is our foundation. It’s how we are able to expand our knowledge of alumni and donors and make strategic decisions. With this in mind, we have launched QlikView (QV), a tool that makes data analysis accessible.

QV enables users to extract, analyze, and report information seamlessly. It has the power to integrate data from multiple sources, including Athena, and process requests in real time. QV offers data reporting in a number of graphical forms, including charts and graphs, giving users ways to more easily explore trends and associations within our data.

For example, if a prospect manager from Athletics is planning a visit to the West Coast to meet with prospects, a quick query in QV can generate a list of alums who live in California and neighboring states who have either given to Columbia Athletics, have an interest in sports, or currently participate in some kind of athletic activity.

We have Lucy Malave, Ramon Maldonado, and Sharon Matthews to thank for getting QV off the ground. They’ve worked with data at Columbia for decades and piloted QV with alumni relations, research, and the annual fund teams. They will be instrumental in showing everyone how they can make the most of the program. Stay tuned for news on upcoming brown bag sessions when we’ll showcase this new tool.
