The Andrew Wellington Cordier Essay Contest

The Journal of International Affairs is seeking submissions for the Fall 2013 Cordier Student Essay Contest for its upcoming issue on Women and Gender. The author of the winning article will receive $500 along with publication alongside noted scholars in the Journal.  Published by Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, the Journal of International Affairs is one of the oldest and most respected foreign affairs periodicals. Past issues have included articles by notable figures such as Noam Chomsky, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Jimmy Carter, Condoleezza Rice, and Kenneth Waltz among others.
Fall 2013: Women and Gender
The Fall 2013 issue will examine Women and Gender, taking a fresh look at contemporary issues and critically evaluating how development institutions, businesses, political bodies, and international organizations respond to evolving challenges associated with the emergence of the “Third Billion.” This term is used here to represent the approximately one billion women in both developing and industrialized nations, whose economic lives have previously been undervalued, undermined, or suppressed, and who could, in the coming years, play more active roles as citizens and economic actors. This issue will explore the potential implications of new thinking and innovation on women’s economic empowerment, development capabilities, poverty reduction, political parity and security sector representation.
The editors recognize that the current gender debate focuses largely on the ever-present issue of inequality and the failures of past policies to address it. We plan to approach the topic from a new angle, bridging the gap between policy aspirations and the implementation of new practices in relation to gender policy. By presenting new developments, the Journal will offer a fresh look at the state of affairs in gender issues that will highlight the positive while exploring opportunities for continued improvement.
Submission Deadline: 2 September 2013, 11:59 PM EST (GMT – 8). Interested authors can send submissions or questions to Maneesha Shrivastava (Cordier Editor) at [email protected].
