Today the Department of the Treasury announced the designation of the gang Mara Salvatrucha, also known as MS-13, as a transnational criminal organization (TCO) under Executive Order (EO) 13581. According to Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David S. Cohen, "MS-13 is…responsible for a multitude of crimes that directly threaten the welfare and security of U.S. citizens, as well as countries throughout Central America." MS-13 is the first TCO designated since the designation of Brother’s Circle, the Camorra, the Zetas, and Yakuza, when President Obama issued the order in 2011. The executive order EO 13581 provides the Treasury with the ability to target MS-13 and other designated TCO with economic sanctions.
