1. What is the rent in Manhattan approximately for a 2 BHK and a 3 BHK?

For 2 BHK houses very close to the university i.e 110th street to 122nd the rent on an average ranges from $2600 to $3200. For houses a little further away that is around 125th Street it ranges from $2200 to $2600.  All this is either on Broadway or Amsterdam. The rent is a little lesser for houses on Morningside or West Harlem. To get exact figures it would be better to contact a broker.

2. Are morningside avenue and west Harlem area safe?

We would suggest people to find apartments anywhere from 103rd to 125th street extending from Riverside to Columbus Avenue. Harlem and Morningside avenue are also safe but is not preferred.

3. Is sharing of rooms accepted by the owners.

Most of the owners are fine with 2 people sharing a room.

4. Will furniture for the house be available through seniors who are leaving for their jobs.

Seniors do post about furniture that they wanna sell off on ISAC as well as the Columbia University group, so you can watch out for the postings there.

5. Approximate expenditure for settling in an apartment in NYC.

It is difficult to put up an amount. However a list of things that you will have to spend on are:

First month rent would include , the rent for that much , a security deposit(which is generally a month’s rent),  broker fee, if you got the apartment through a broker(which is generally around 12% of the annual rent).

Expenditure on setting up internet connection and other such facilities.(There are a lot of student offers that are present for these on campus so watch out for them).

Furniture, kitchen appliances and other miscellaneous stuff for your house.
