Gregory J. Blotnick, who spent years in equity research at some of Wall Street’s top firms, has decided to take his expertise in a different direction. Last year, Blotnick founded Valiant Research LLC — a firm dedicated to bringing institutional-grade market intelligence to investors big and small.
It’s a bold move that speaks to a growing frustration many have witnessed: the explosion of retail investing over the past few years has been accompanied by an equally dramatic rise in questionable advice from self-appointed experts. “The surge in public interest in the stock market has been incredible to watch,” Blotnick explains. “But there’s a dark side to this democratization. Too many new investors are getting burned by ‘advisors’ who have never spent any time in professional money management. People are paying for guidance that’s making them worse off than if they’d just bought index funds and called it a day.”
Blotnick’s resume suggests that he has seen enough to have an informed opinion. Prior to starting his own fund, Brattle Street Capital, he was an analyst at both Citadel LLC and Schonfeld Strategic Advisors after prior stints at Exis Capital, North Elm Capital, and Doubloon Capital, along with a two-year hiatus where he collected an MBA from Columbia Business School.
The thesis behind Valiant Research is straightforward: why should sophisticated investment analysis remain the exclusive domain of hedge funds and institutional money managers? All these tools can be adapted for individual investors, they just need to be presented in an accessible way. This isn’t about dumbing down complex strategies or promising short-term results. Valiant hopes to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world application, says Blotnick, while drawing on the investment philosophies of legendary investors.
The retail investing boom that began during the pandemic has created a massive audience hungry for quality investment guidance. While Valiant will serve institutional clients as well, Blotnick’s primary mission is clear: to try and level the playing field for individual investors. It’s an ambitious goal that requires more than just good intentions, and demands the kind of expertise that can only be learned from years spent in trading markets under pressure.
Whether Blotnick can successfully translate his institutional experience into actionable insights remains to be seen. But in a market saturated with noise, the promise of research grounded in academic rigor and professional experience is certainly appealing. For individual investors tired of sifting through questionable advice, Valiant may just be the quality guidance they’ve been seeking.
