I’m supposed to be doing a literature review so a full-blown weekend recap isn’t happening this week (not from me, anyway). But we have great race reports from Anna and Nathan.

My very short race reports:

The Rhode Race was a lot of fun but there weren’t really any really hard features to break things up, so a selection came early on the second lap via riders making the race hard:

1) One of the RISD riders attacked really hard up a steep hill just before the dirt sections. I don’t think this popped anyone off the back, but I was near the front hanging on for dear life so I can’t say for sure. At the very least, it softened everyone’s legs up.
2) Shortly after that attack, we hit the first of three dirt sections. My legs had recovered a bit, but the desire for payback that I get anytime someone attacks up a steep hill had not. So I hit the front and hammered, and pretty soon I had opened up a pretty sizable gap on the field.

I knew it was too far from the finish for it to stick, but I was happy to make everyone chase, and even happier that all those guys who go up steep hills fast had to suffer a little bit on the dirt. I was caught a little before the third dirt section and when we got back on pavement, someone said we had a gap. Sure enough, only about 20 riders were still there. The rest of the race was pretty boring, with people attacking repeatedly on downhills (???), and nobody other than Sean from Penn State willing to do any work (it was pretty clear that he was treating this as a training race and is gunning for Black Mo’ next weekend). Anyway, I jumped from the group at the bottom of the two-mile false flat run-in to the finish, totally burying myself in the pain cave. Two KMS riders bridged, I mistimed my sprint and took second to someone who is at least ten years younger than me. Yep.

The crit: fast and hard. Also, a lot of fun.
