Balkan Queer Initiative: Second Meeting

The second meeting of the Balkan Queer Initiative will take place on Friday, February 21st, 2014 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.The Balkan Queer Initiative seeks to cultivate community among people from the Balkans in the greater NYC area who identify as queer, transgender, bisexual, lesbian and/or gay. To start, our main purpose is to provide a supportive and inclusive space for each other. But, we look forward to ideas from you around which we can further the purpose of the initiative by celebrating our backgrounds and engaging in solidarity with the Balkan queer communities.

This group is open to anyone who identifies as a Balkan queer or their ally.

KULTURNI DAN – Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014 – 5pm

Dear friends, we hope you will join us to celebrate Kulturni Dan on Saturday, February 8, 2014, 5pm-7pm, at Marlene Tavern in Sunnyside, owned and operated by Slovenian Ana Kitic.

 We plan to sing Slovenian songs and read Prešeren’s poetry in Slovene – if you would like to perform or in some way contribute to the program, please let us know.  Also, feel free to invite your friends, Slovenian, American and others!  Finally, if you are planning to come, can you let us know byMonday, Feb. 3rd, so that we have a general idea of how many we will be and how to reserve seating?  Your thoughts, comments and suggestions are welcome, we look forward to hearing from you and to seeing you.

Danis Tanovic at MoMA – Film screening: ‘An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker’

Bosnian Academy Award-winning film director Danis Tanovic will screen his new film ‘An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker’ at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City.

The film screening will take place on Monday, February 17th, 2014 at 8 p.m., which will be followed by a discussion with Tanovic.
If you can’t make it to this screening, there will be one more screening on Tuesday, February 18th, 2014 at 4 p.m.

Study Abroad Opportunity in Prague!

Professor Alan Timberlake has informed CUCEE about a study abroad opportunity in Prague for those interested in the region. Information about the opportunity is right below:

Transitions Online (TOL) is a short-term study abroad program in Prague. The group organizing these classes is a nonprofit organization, which focuses on the news media in the 29 post-communist countries of Europe and the former Soviet Union. They offer short-term classes (usually about 9 days) and internships to students, who are interested in learning more about the region, culture, and/or are studying journalism, media, and political science. The courses offered this winter are:

Foreign Correspondent Training Course

 

Breaking into Travel Writing

 

Investigative Journalism:  Follow the Money in Central and Eastern Europe
