Into the Woods
An excerpt from the director’s note:
“Once upon a time…” This phrase that traditionally begins all fairy tales is the opening line of Into the Woods, delivered to the audience by a narrator. If we take a moment to think about the phrase, we see that it introduces the archetypal nature of the story to come: this happened “once” in an undefined time and place, meaning that it could happen in any time and in any place. Fairy tales speak to an audience on a basic, universal level, representing not specific people or places or times, but general types of experiences and situations that are commonly relevant to all human beings.
The concept of going “into the woods” is a metaphor for the necessary journey into the world that we all encounter. The experience of leaving “home,” the place where things are secure, stable, safe, and known, and traveling into the “woods,” the ever-changing environment that isn’t familiar or safe, is relevant to every person who has learned to make the distinction between “home” and “world.” As we grow, we are compelled for various reasons to venture beyond the borders of our known world and to explore new territory. We aim to go “into the woods and out of the woods and home before dark,” but it often isn’t so simple, and we must learn how to function in a world that will always present challenges…Into the Woods played during CMTS’s Fall 2007-2008 season.
