Bat Boy
Bat Boy is a rock musical set in the fictional town of Hope Falls, West Virginia, the hero is a humanized, half bat-creature, two of the main characters die unexpectedly, the guy doesn’t get the girl in the end, and–oh, it’s a comedy. Written just over a decade ago by newcomers Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming, the seemingly goofy show based on a tabloid news article actually explores themes of hypocrisy and isolation and grapples with the ideas of savagery and acceptance in modern society. The power of this show lies in its ability to take the audience by surprise. Rather than rely solely on kitschy humor and parody, Bat Boy: The Musical focuses its attention on the humanity of its story. The members of the audience root for Bat Boy’s acceptance and find themselves questioning what makes society so critical of people that are different. Down to the author’s note in the script, the show forces a reality that is both bizarre and grounded–the people of Hope Falls display a close-mindedness that exists in virtually every society.
Bat Boy played November 19-21, 2009 in the Lerner Black Box.
