Candide
Based on Voltaire’s merciless satire of Enlightenment optimism, Candide follows the eponymous hero on a picaresque journey of disillusionment. In the kingdom of Westphalia, Candide, the beautiful Cunegonde, the vain Maximillian, and the lusty Paquette learn from their Leibnizian professor Pangloss that “all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.” However, when Candide is banished from Westphalia, he sets off on a hilarious, globe- spanning romp, encountering dishonesty, disease, and war along the way. Set to one of the great scores of the American musical theater, with a madcap book by Hugh Wheeler, Candide begs the question: is this truly the best of all possible worlds?
Candide played November 29-December 1, 2012 in the Austin E. Quigley Black Box Theatre in Lerner Hall.
