Organist Dina Foster-Osbourne of Abyssinian Baptist Church graced us with an evening of her skillful and poetic mastery of the organ. Her musical repertoire reminded us of the beauty of organ music.

Music at St. Paul’s Featuring Stephen Hamilton
The organist provided a fluid interpretation of Marcel Dupre’s Prelude and Fugue in B Major, Opus 7, No. 1. Hamilton captured the content and substance of the French composition by playing difficult figurations and chords with ease.

Music at St. Paul’s featuring Timothy Smith
The music of Bach was brought to life in tonight’s Music at St. Paul’s concert. Columbia University Organist, Timothy Smith, graced us with an evening of Bach’s famous works. The emotions expressed in the Three Chorale Preludes and the impeccable pedal work in the Bach Toccata were definite highlights of the evening.

Music at St. Paul’s featuring Roy Jennings and Soloists
On Tuesday, April 14th, pianist and composer Roy Jennings reminded many of the Columbia community that April is National Poetry Month with a concert of art songs based on the works of Paul Lawrence Dunbar and Langston Hughes. Mr. Jennings―fast becoming a Music at St. Paul’s favorite―assembled a stellar array of vocal talent (Diana Solomon-Glover, Angela L. Owens, Jorell Williams, Karmesha Peake, and Chauncey Packer) to accompany his piano performance. With style to spare, the performance captivated the audience and drew in students and community members as the stunning sounds carried through the open doors of St. Paul’s Chapel. For an hour at least, our dreams of music and poetry were not deferred.

Music at St. Paul’s featuring the Columbia Guitar Duo
The Columbia Guitar Duo (Kevin Choi, CC ’17 & Javier Llaca, CC ’16) was established in 2014 and is currently coached by maestros Arthur Kampela and Marco Cappelli. They have recently been invited to perform at Harvard University, Carnegie Hall, and WKCR New York. Incorporating a wide range of works in their programs, their goal is to further the presence of the classical guitar in modern concert settings.
The duo’s performance, A Five-Course Meal: From Lute Music in the Renaissance to Tango in the 21st Century, served up a delicious assortment of musical sustenance. Music at St. Paul’s was proud to host such talented, professional members of the Columbia community.

Music at St. Paul’s featuring 2Flutes
Although the interior of St. Paul’s Chapel is easily classified as beautiful, many performers for Music at St. Paul’s understand the difficulty of that same space. Domes, arches, transepts, and traffic on Amsterdam all present unique challenges to musicians. Of course, musicians such as Laura Falzon, flute, Pamela Sklar, flute, and Daniel Beliavsky, piano, make it look and sound easy. Performing as 2Flutes Ensemble, the group presented works by Thomas Morley, Clément Philibert Léo Delibes, Chen Yi*, Victoria Bond*, Anže Rozman, Marilyn Bliss*, Rain Worthington*, and Franz Doppler. Although only a few feet in distance, with the two flutists at the top of the altar steps and the Steinway piano player at the base, the performers noticed a difficulty in hearing one another. But, from the audiences vantage point, well… let this video be proof enough.

“Reflecting on Betrayal: Bach’s St. Matthew Passion”
On Tuesday, March 3rd, the Columbia University Bach Society presented a combination concert and lecture structured around J.S. Bach’s sacred oratorio St. Matthew Passion. Led by Kevin Lee, the Bach Society’s Artistic Director, the performance applied Columbia’s resident intellectual curiosity to one of Bach’s most powerful works in the truly fitting setting of St. Paul’s Chapel.

Music at St. Paul’s featuring Roy Jennings, piano & Marvin Lowe, bass-baritone
On Tuesday, February 10th, an enthusiastic crowd gathered to welcome Roy Jennings and Marvin Lowe for their special Black History Month celebratory performance of African-American Spirituals. The program, which included works of Margaret Bonds and Mr. Jennings himself, resonated throughout St. Paul’s Chapel to the great delight of the nearly 200 guests. After a standing ovation, Mr. Lowe revealed to the audience that it was Mr. Jennings birthday and led the entire audience in an impressive rendition of “Happy Birthday.” The Office of the University Chaplain would like to express profound thanks to both performers as well as the wonderful audience. We hope to see you at future performances!
