Meeting current and future students, preparing for graduation, and a “Stealthy Starbucks”

While it’s slowing down a little bit for the Admissions and Financial Aid office, we’re still busy with everything happening on campus. Students and faculty are wrapping up finals, and the Class of 2019 is preparing for graduation — SIPA’s is this weekend, and the Columbia University-wide Commencement is next Wednesday.

You may have noticed that we’ve had a number of guest posts from SIPA students on the blog, talking about everything from student life to projects they worked on — we’ll keep this up so that you can continue to get a full student perspective.

A few updates:

  • I got the pleasure of meeting a group of Marist College students a few weeks ago, whose guidance counselor is herself a SIPA alum! Not all of the students were planning on applying immediately after graduation, but as I told them: If coming to SIPA is your goal, connect with us at Admissions sooner rather than later. It’s helpful to have time to learn and prepare for the application process instead of rushing last-minute while juggling everything else going on in your life.

  • A friendly reminder that the Yellow Ribbon Program is open for the 19/20 academic year. The application is available here under “The Yellow Ribbon Program.” For more information, please email [email protected].
  • SIPA alumni gave some advice for incoming students last year. I think it’s still relevant today in figuring out how to navigate any graduate school system.
  • And finally, a bit of light reading as we head into the end of the week: “At CIA Starbucks, even the baristas are covert”

If you’re a blog reader and are interested in a topic that we haven’t covered, feel free to email or submit an idea. Two recent posts were based on suggestions by readers like you.

Yellow Ribbon Program opens May 3

Update on the Yellow Ribbon Program

If you are an incoming SIPA student (or a continuing one — unless you are already a SIPA YRP recipient) and are 100% GI Bill eligible, then make sure you don’t throw away the chance to get more funding.   For more information about our Yellow Ribbon Program participation, read the May 28 post.

The Yellow Ribbon scholarship application is now live at https://sipa.columbia.edu/admissions/applying-to-sipa/financial-aid/sipa-columbia-funding.

Yellow Ribbon Program

The Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs is pleased to announce the application for the Yellow Ribbon Program Scholarship, available to eligible veterans of the US Armed Forces, for the 2014/15 academic year.

The Yellow Ribbon Program is an initiative authorized by the Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 (the Post-9/11 GI Bill) in which educational institutions provide eligible student veterans with a partial tuition waiver or grant matched by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. This program supplements the base educational benefits provided by the Post-9/11 GI Bill. To be eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program, you must be a US veteran eligible for the maximum level (100%) of benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill according to your VA Certificate of Eligibility. If you are a veteran of the US Armed Forces and would like to learn more about eligibility for these benefits, please visit the GI Bill website at www.gibill.va.gov/.

SIPA is committed to honoring those who have served our country by being one of seventeen individual schools at Columbia University participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program.   An application is required and will be available on our website by Monday June 9, 2014 at noon, Eastern Daylight Time. The application will be a Google document that is to be submitted online; no other documentation is required. Those who received a Yellow Ribbon scholarship at SIPA in the 2013/14 academic year and will be enrolled at SIPA for 2014/15 [and have maintained their eligibility] need not reapply, the award will be renewed in an amount based on available funding.

SIPA cannot guarantee funding for every eligible candidate, and funding will be on a first come, first served basis, so please make sure that you complete the application no later than June 27, 2014.

Yellow Ribbon Reminder

The application for the Yellow Ribbon scholarship will be live on Monday, June 10th at 12:00pm EDT (tomorrow).  SIPA students who qualify at the 100% level for the Post 9/11 GI Bill may apply for consideration.  Under the Post 9/11 GI Bill, eligibility for the Yellow Ribbon Program is determined on a first-come, first-served basis.  The application will be available at:  http://new.sipa.columbia.edu/admissions/applying-to-sipa/applying-for-financial-aid under a link that will be labeled “Yellow Ribbon Program Application.”

If you are a veteran of the US Armed Forces and would like to learn more about eligibility for these benefits, please visit the GI Bill website at www.gibill.va.gov/.
