Class of 2020 Representative

Name: Danielle Resheff

Party: LionHeart

Bio: Danielle has felt fortunate to represent the Class of 2020 this year. With two semesters of experience, she plans to improve mental health and disability services on campus, create more class-wide events, and continue to listen to the suggestions and concerns of her fellow CC’20 students. After planning multiple study breaks for first-years, distributing class apparel, coordinating the Free Tampon and Pad Pilot Program, advocating for mental health reforms, and recently gaining leeway on acquiring free MTA subway vouchers for students, Danielle can’t wait to continue reforming Columbia policies and building a stronger campus community next year and beyond!

Platform: LionHeart would love to continue to pursue our long-term policies established last semester. We feel that our more nuanced understanding and experience of the administration will allow us to further our goals. We hope to continue our commitment to study breaks with free food and giveaways as a way to continue to boost both class spirit, and school spirit as a whole.

1. Mental Health
-address underlying causes of stress culture in line with a preventative approach
-send out regular detailed updates on what CCSC has achieved regarding community health;
-create greater incentives to attend CPS and other general mental health events;
-produce more Stressbusters sessions – not just during midterms and finals season;
-foster a more philanthropic atmosphere through events to give back to the community;
-send weekly emails where we give shout-outs to members of the Class of 2020 who have done great things as well as a nominated person of the week and meme of the week;
-convey student concerns with mental health policy and CPS to the administration in tandem with the Mental Health Task Force
-increase the number of puppy study breaks for students;
– promote relevant stress-relieving apps which have been proven to positively impact our community’s mental health;

2. Building Community
– create new long-lasting traditions to serve the wider Columbia community (e.g. fun charity events, speed-dating, talent show, battle of the bands);
-Increase the number of affordable options for Class of 2020 apparel;
-Be spontaneous! We can’t make the world work as we want it to, so when the opportunity comes for a fun event (great weather), we’re going to be ready to provide it for you!

3. Marginalized students
– plan a number of events beginning with a celebration of the opening of the LGBTQ centre;
– continue to advocate for policies supporting LGBTQ students and students of color, as well as students of other marginalized identities (first-generation, low-income, international);
– continue to improve resources for marginalized students in health services, financial aid, preprofessional advising, and more.

We are underwhelmed by the resources available to students with disabilities and would like to work with them to make Columbia a more welcoming place for all.

4. Networking and career Opportunities
– advocate for more sophomore summer internship opportunities through working with CCE to improve Handshake powered by LionShare;
-provide you with regular updates on jobs specifically for sophomores available at CCE;
-coordinate study breaks with CCE so that we can have fun while pursuing career opportunities.

Finally, we would like to finalize our ongoing initiatives from this year. We are currently in the process of achieving subsidized MTA subway cards for students for academic, professional, and extracurricular purposes and ensuring availability of on-the-go breakfast items (along with more variety and value for your money!). LionHeart would like to continue our successful track record with our new platform for next year.

Party: N/A

Bio: My name is Fiona Laird, and I’m running for Class Representative for the Class of 2020. I am from the Western Slope of Colorado, and am majoring in Sustainable Development and Economics. I currently serve on the Campus Life committee for CCSC. I would love the opportunity to serve as Class Representative because, coming from a small town, I know the power of a connected, supportive community. As Class Representative, I will work to strengthen, connect, and unify our class and all of Columbia in an effort to help make our school a more positive, supportive, and happy place.

Platform: As a representative for the Class of 2020, I have five priorities that I’d like to work on. They include:

1. Increase accessibility of Student Council activities to all students and make it easier for students to participate through improving and expanding communication between Student Council and the student body. This includes more frequent, short email updates as well as more frequent Facebook updates and more flyering for events.
2. Strengthen the sense of community within the Columbia student body in an effort to reduce overall stress and create a healthy campus culture. Through working to organize more campus-wide events and “random acts of kindness” (i.e. pop-up giveaways, activities, etc.), I hope to help strengthen the network of support on the Columbia campus and create a positive, more nurturing day to day environment.
3. Work to make additional mental health resources available and make existing mental health resources more accessible. Work to create a proactive, preventative mental health culture in which student mental health services reach out to all students periodically to check in.
4. Address sophomore-specific concerns to help prevent “sophomore slump” through creating spaces and times for students to better get to know their advisors and creating unique sophomore class events.
5. Facilitate communication between administration and student groups in order to make sure all student voices from a variety of perspectives are heard. This includes interfacing with other student groups to help ensure that all people on campus feel welcome. Work with the Inclusivity and Equity Representative to better represent minority groups and perspectives.

Party: LionHeart

Bio: Grant was grateful to serve as a Representative for the Class of 2020 this semester. Over the past year, he represented the student body by co-authoring the proposal for increased space for the LGBTQ community and students of color in Lerner and Schapiro (which will open in the fall). He also designed College Days and CC’20 apparel, advocated for mental health reforms at CPS, and served as social media coordinator for CCSC’s Communications Committee. He hopes to continue advancing policies supporting underrepresented students, creating community, and improving mental health on-campus. And—he promises to bring even cuter apparel if re-elected!

Name: Astrid Walker-Stewart

Bio: Astrid is a freshman member of the varsity rowing team and worked on multiple projects to build community spirit on-campus. This past year, along with her LionHeart cohorts, she organized numerous study breaks to help ease stress amongst her peers, created an event to promote an inter-school petition to prevent campus sexual assault, and worked in the Campus Life committee on events like Columbia College Days, ’Twas the Night Before Tree Lighting, Homecoming, etc… Astrid would love to continue serving the Columbia community as CC’20 representative with the knowledge and experience she has gained over the course of this year!
