Sept. 4, 2012: ALFREDO JAAR

The VALS team is very excited to present our inaugural speaker for the 2012-2013 season: Alfredo Jaar.

Jaar is an artist, architect, and filmmaker who lives and works in New York. He was born in Santiago de Chile in 1956.

His work has been shown extensively around the world. He has participated in the Biennales of Venice, São Paulo, Sydney, and Istanbul among others, as well as Documenta in Kassel.

Venues for his solo exhibitions include the New Museum in NY, Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, Fundación Telefónica in Santiago and Musée des Beaux Arts in Lausanne. This summer in Berlin an extensive retrospective titled, “The Way It Is. An Aesthetics of Resistance,” was presented by the New Society for Visual Arts across three major sites around the city.

Jaar is a Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow and has received Spain’s prestigious Premio Extremadura a la Creación.
