DESCRIPTION:Caveat\, 21 Clinton St. \nAIDS abruptly appeared in 1981 and quickly created a world of fear\, destroying countless lives and exposing the deadly power of public stigma along the way. Almost four decades later\, much has changed\, and yet much work still remains to be done. Three Epidemics uses a mix of science and theatrical multimedia to explore the history of HIV and assess how it evolved from a deadly infection to a chronic disease\, how lack of access to healthcare and mistaken public perception may be helping the disease spread\, and how we can use tools of advocacy and awareness to win the fight against AIDS. With Allison Navis\, directed by Sarah Hughes.\n \nThe show is 21+. More information and tickets ($15) available on the website. \nAllison Navis is a fellow in the Neuro AIDS Department at Mount Sinai Hospital. She got her undergraduate degree in neuroscience at Boston University and completed her MD from New York Medical College. She recently finished a residency in neurology at Mount Sinai Beth Israel before choosing to specialize in HIV. In addition to treating patients\, she researches the effects of HIV on the nervous system and is currently involved in studies both in New York City and Sub-Saharan Africa. She has an interest in healthcare advocacy and preventative health for underserved communities. \nSarah Hughes is a director and producer of theater and new media. She’s developed theater\, installation and virtual reality works with artists and companies such as McFeely Sam Goodman\, Eliza Bent\, Corinne Donly\, Julia May Jonas / Nellie Tinder\, Cara Scarmack\, Graham Sack and Sensorium\, Superhero Clubhouse\, and Elevator Repair Service\, and her work has been seen at Abrons Arts Center\, The Tank\, PEN World Voices\, and BAM Next Wave\, among others. 2016-17 Civilians R&D Lab\, New Georges Affiliated Artist\, Target Margin Theater Associated Artist\, Clubbed Thumb 2017-18 Directing Fellow. \nThis event is part of the Underground Science Festival.
