SUMMARY:Sérgio Burgi - Photography and Urban History: Georeferencing Historical Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Sérgio Burgi\, Curator of Photography at the Instituto Moreira Salles\, Brazil \nRio de Janeiro’s modernization has shaped not only its urban space but also the city’s modes of sociability and its imagery. The talk will explore the shaping of the city’s public image through historical photographs\, and will also discuss the possibilities offered by contemporary digital georeferencing systems. Instituto Moreira Salles Photography Department in Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil has partnered with the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest\, Snow and Landscape Research / WSL in Switzerland for testing the monoplotting tool developed by WSL for obtaining geographic data from historical photographs\, a new approach to the study of urban history and dynamics. \nBorn in São Paulo in 1958\, Sérgio Burgi is a graduate of Social Sciences from USP – Universidade de São Paulo\, Brazil\, in 1981\, the same year he started a master’s program in Photographic Conservation at the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences\, at the Rochester Institute of Technology\, where\, in 1984\, he obtained a master’s degree in Fine Arts in Photography and an associate degree in Photographic Science from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He was coordinator of the Center of Photographic Conservation and Preservation at FUNARTE between 1984 and 1991. He is a member of the Photographic Preservation Group of the Conservation Committee at the International Council of Museums (ICOM)\, and since 1999 he heads the photography department of the Instituto Moreira Salles. \nFor more information\, please visit the Butler Library website. \n
