DESCRIPTION:The New York Academy of Medicine\, 1216 Fifth Avenue at 103rd Street\, New York\, NY 10029\n\nDr. Pablo Alvarez\, Outreach Librarian and Curator at the Special Collections Library\, University of Michigan \nLast February the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Library hosted a major exhibition\, “The Art and Science of Healing: From Antiquity to the Renaissance.” The display explored various themes such as the role of religion and magic in healing the soul and body\, the influence of Greco-Roman methods of diagnosis and treatment in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance\, and the multilingual transmission of medical knowledge in both manuscript and printed form. This talk will be a behind-the-scenes look at the different stages of a multidisciplinary adventure that culminated with the publication of an exhibit catalog. \nThe event is free and open to the public\, but registration is required; please do so on the website. \nDr. Pablo Alvarez is Outreach Librarian and Curator at the Special Collections Library\, University of Michigan. He is responsible for the curation and promotion of the early book collections\, including medieval manuscripts and early printed books up to 1700. Presently\, he is preparing for publication the edition and English translation of a seventeenth-century printer’s manual: Institución\, y origen del arte de la imprenta\, y reglas generales para los componedores (Madrid: 1680) by the Spanish typesetter Alonso Víctor de Paredes. \nThis event is sponsored by the New York Academy of Medicine.
