DESCRIPTION:  \nThe general public is warmly invited to a unique Biduum Latinum: a two-day celebration of Roman and Medieval Botany\, including a lecture\, book-viewing\, and botanical walking tour\, organized jointly by Fordham University and The New York Botanical Garden’s Humanities Institute. \nPlease refer to the following schedule: \nFriday\, Sept. 30\, 3-5 pm. Mertz Library\,\nThe New York Botanical Garden\, Library Building\, 6th floor \n3:00 pm Welcome and Introduction:\nVanessa Sellers\, Coordinator Humanities Institute\, NYBG\, and\nSusanne Hafner\, Director of the Center for Medieval Studies\, Fordham University\n3:10 pm Lecture by Robin Fleming\, Boston College: “Vanishing plants\, animals\, and places:\nBritain’s transformation from Roman to Medieval.”\n4:00 pm Book-viewing in the Mertz Library Rare Book Room of Medieval manuscripts with\nKatherine Briant\, Graduate Student Medieval Studies\, Fordham University\n4:15 pm Reception 4th Floor Britton Rotunda\n5:00 pm End program \nSaturday\, Oct. 1: 3-5 pm. Location: NYBG\, Conservation Gate\, promptly 3:00 pm \nIter botanicum: Botanical tour in Latin through the Garden\, jointly conducted by\nMatthew McGowan\, Department of Classics\, Fordham University\, and\nRobbin Moran\, Institute of Systematic Botany\, NYBG. \nThe tour includes an overview of the history of botany from Theophrastus to Linnaeus\,\nreadings from Cicero\, Vergil\, and Pliny\, and a visit to the William and Lynda Steere\nHerbarium. \nThis FREE event starts rain or shine at the Conservatory Gate at 3:00 pm.\nSpace for the tour is limited\, please RSVP at: Hafner@fordham.edu.
