DESCRIPTION:420 W 118th St\, Room 1501\, New York\, NY 10027 \nKeynote Speaker: Michael Nutter\, Former Mayor of Philadelphia \nPanelists: Charles Branas\, Mailman School of Public Health; Ester Fuchs\, SIPA; Diana Hernández\, Mailman School of Public Health; Malo André Hutson\, Graduate School of Architecture\, Planning\, and Preservation; Vincent Schiraldi\, School of Social Work; and Rose Culson-Villazer\, Columbia Law School. \nModerator: Jane Waldfogel\, School of Social Work. \nAt a time when worsening maternal mortality rates in the United States are making the news—women in the United States are more likely to die from childbirth- or pregnancy-related causes than other women in the developed world\, and black women are three to four times more likely than white women to die of pregnancy or delivery complications—a group of Columbia University experts will convene to discuss measures that can be taken at the city level to improve urban health and reduce gaps in health between less and more advantaged groups. Maternal health is just one measure that shows glaring health disparities; others include infant mortality\, life expectancy\, percent low birthweight\, crime-related mortality\, injury mortality\, and cancer mortality. \nCities Matter: The Role of Cities in Supporting Health (#CitiesMatter) kicks off with a keynote address by former Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter on his experience with city-level efforts to improve health and reduce health disparities\, followed by a panel discussion among Columbia University professors from across disciplines on what cities can and should do to improve population health and reduce disparities. \nTo register for the in-person event\, please visit the EventBrite.
