SUMMARY:Know Science: Mindfulness and Love - Taste of Science Festival
DESCRIPTION:DROM\, 85 Avenue A New York\, NY\, 10009 \nMeriah DeJoseph\, New York University \nBianca Jones Marlin\, Columbia University \nJoin Know Science\, an international education and advocacy organization working to promote knowledge of science and scientific research to a non-specialized audience\, for the taste of science festival! \nExciting studies in the last decade have shown that practicing mindfulness can bring a variety of mental and physical health benefits. Mindfulness has become the latest trend in today’s society\, but what does the research really say about it? In this talk\, we will explore how and why our brains are wired to regulate our thoughts and emotions\, what happens when our ability to regulate fails\, and how mindfulness can be used as a tool to maintain self-regulation in both adults and children. \nBabies change everything. Dr. Marlin examines how the brain adapts to care for a newborn\, and how a baby’s cry can control adult behavior. Her research focuses on the vital bond between parent and child\, and investigates the use of neurochemicals\, such as the “love drug” oxytocin\, as a treatment to strengthen fragile and broken parent-child relationships. \nTickets for this event ($5) can be purchased online; 21+ only. \nMeriah DeJoseph is a Lab Manager at NYU. She has a BS in cognitive neuroscience from UCSD and an MA in psychology from Columbia University. \nBianca Jones Marlin is a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Dr. Richard Axel in the Department of Neuroscience at Columbia University. She holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience from New York University School of Medicine and dual bachelor’s degrees in biology and adolescent education from Saint John’s University. \nThis event is part of the 2018 Taste of Science Festival.
