SUMMARY:John D. Lantos - Fifty Shades of Genomics: Assessing the Pain and the Pleasure of Genomic Testing
DESCRIPTION:The talk will begin with a brief discussion of the FDA’s reasoning in their decision to forbid “23&Me” from offering interpretations of genetic results.  Dr. Lantos will then examine the hypothetical harms that might arise from genomic information (depression\, anxiety\, unnecessary medical interventions\, harmful medical interventions) and argue that genomics is much more similar to other sorts of medical testing\, that many people want the information\, even if it is risky\, and that we will need to live with some risks in the genomic era. \nFor further information\, contact Paul S. Appelbaum\, MD\, Department of Psychiatry\, at 646-774-8630 or psa21@columbia.edu. \nJohn Lantos\, M.D.\, board-certified pediatrician and nationally-known ethicist\, is the Director of the Children’s Mercy Bioethics Center (CMBC). Dr. Lantos spent 21 years at the University of Chicago\, most recently as Professor of Pediatrics and the Associate Chair for Academic Affairs. After two years as the John B. Francis Chair in Bioethics at the Center for Practical Bioethics\, he came to Children’s Mercy to start the CMBC. He received his M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital National Medical Center in Washington\, D.C. He completed a fellowship in clinical medical ethics at the University of Chicago. He has served as president of the American Society of Law\, Medicine and Ethics and the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities. He has written or edited numerous books and has published more than 250 journal articles and book chapters.
