DESCRIPTION:200B Schermerhorn Hall\, Columbia University \n Ilan Dar-Nimrod\, University of Sydney \nThe 20th century was dubbed the Century of the Gene and the 21st century is likely to upstage its predecessor in that regard. Dar-Nimrod will present theoretical and empirical research that addresses the effects that are elicited when individuals encounter arguments propagating the relevance of genes for specific behaviors\, conditions\, diseases\, and group differences. The presentation will address a variety of effects ranging from ingroup perceptions to evaluations of outgroups\, discussing research on people’s understanding of social categorizations such as race and gender\, as well as people’s comprehension of the etiology of health and behaviors assessed through the lens of genetic essentialism. \nIlan Dar-Nimrod is a professor at the University of Sydney\, Australia. Dar-Nimrod completed their bachelor degree with a double major at Haifa University (Israel) and my PhD (social psychology) at the University of British Columbia (Canada). As a researcher\, they are interested in diverse topics such as how our genes and environment affect us physically and cognitively\, the relationship between our choices and our satisfaction. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nThis event is sponsored by Columbia University and Barnard College and is part of the Psychology Department Seminar Series.
