SUMMARY:Food\, Farming\, and Sustainability Conference
DESCRIPTION:International Affairs Building\, Kellogg Center (Room 1501)\, Columbia University\n420 West 118th Street\, New York \nUPDATE 9/13: SEATS AT THE CONFERENCE ARE AVAILABLE. PLEASE CHECK IN AT THE REGISTRATION DESK. The morning sessions will be streamed live. \nThe Environmental Sciences and Humanities Research Cluster at the Center for Science and Society invites you to “Food\, Farming\, and Sustainability.” With approximately 815 million people around the world currently undernourished and the global population expected to grow by 2 billion by 2050\, two of the most pressing issues that humanity will face over the next 30 years is 1) the trend towards global hunger and 2) our ability to create innovative and equitable solutions to feeding the global population. Given that these issues are multidimensional and therefore cannot be solved through the lens of any one discipline\, we will convene an interdisciplinary conference that will look at the cultural\, economic\, and environmental aspects of sustainability in our food system. \nThis one-day conference will entail a mix of panel discussions and individual presentations from the morning to early afternoon that will be open to the public\, followed by a closed-door working group meeting for speakers. The purpose of this working group meeting will be to draft a design for a novel food systems program that would bring together the natural and social sciences and humanities to find unique\, cross-disciplinary solutions to food sustainability. The program is entitled\, “Nexus for Integrative Food Systems Syntheses (NIFSS).” \nSpeaker sessions and panels are open to the public\, but registration is required via EventBrite. Please email Project Manager Roshana Nabi (rn2019@columbia.edu) with any questions. \nConfirmed Speakers:\n– Ed Carr (Director and Professor\, International Development\, Community\, and Environment Department\, Clark University)\n– Anupama Joshi (Executive Director and Co-Founder\, National Farm to School Network)\n– Karen Karp (President of Karen Karp & Partners)\n– Sarah McKune (Assistant Professor\, Department of Environmental and Global Health\, University of Florida)\n– Danielle Nierenberg (President\, Food Tank)\n– Chris Otter (Associate Professor\, History Department\, The Ohio State University)\n– Karen Washington (Rise and Root Farm) \nConference Organizers:\n– Shahid Naeem (Professor of Ecology in the Department of Ecology\, Evolution\, and Environmental Biology\, Director of the Earth Institute Center for Environment Sustainability\, and Co-Director of the Environmental Sciences and Humanities Research Cluster)\n– Sara Tjossem (Senior Lecturer in Discipline of International and Public Affairs and Co-Director of the Environmental Sciences and Humanities Research Cluster) \n  \n\nDownload (PDF\, 214KB)
