DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Humanities Institute—LuEsther T. Mertz Library \nFriday\, February 26\, 2016\n2:00–4:00 p.m.\nMertz Library Reading Room \nPromoting new thinking about today’s rapidly changing societies in increasingly urban environments\, this roundtable will focus on land\, law\, and ecology—encompassing the four elements: air\, earth\, water\, fire.  A team of experts from Fordham University\, including J. Alan Clark\, Professor of Biology\, Sheila Foster\, Professor of Land Use and Property Law\, and Roger Panetta\, Professor of History\, will lead the discourse\, discussing key issues\, from bird migration and light pollution (air) to legal ramifications of landownership (earth); the development of New York City waterfronts and coastal defense (water); and political ecology and social vulnerability (fire). \nThe Humanities Institute is an innovative\, Andrew W. Mellon-sponsored initiative created to connect the botanical arts and sciences in inspiring new ways. Set at the center of the Garden\, the Institute uses the historical landscape and renowned collections of the Mertz Library\, Archives and Herbarium\, as sources for interdisciplinary inquiry.
