SUMMARY:Adrianna Bagnall-Munson - What a Mediminder Does: Arranging Autonomy Through Technologies of Care
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Adrianna Bagnall-Munson\, Graduate Student\, Columbia University \nThe Science\, Knowledge\, and Technology workshop (SKAT) gathers social scientists interested in how knowledge is created\, distributed\, drawn upon\, and collectively understood. The workshop brings together diverse theoretical perspective and methodological approaches to social studies of SKAT. These include sociology of expertise\, sociology of professions\, organizational analysis\, actor-network approaches\, medical sociology\, and science studies\, among other approaches. In each meeting\, a student or guest speaker presents their work briefly\, followed by open discussion. If you wish to attend or receive the workshop paper\, please contact Larry Au (larry.au@columbia.edu). \nAdrianna Bagnall-Munson‘s research draws on the areas of legal sociology and knowledge making to explore the our cultural understanding of adulthood. They explore this through ethnographic and historical research on intellectual and developmental disability. Their dissertation focuses in on one independent living program for young adults with disabilities to illuminate the ways in which staff and adults navigate the tension between care and autonomy. Along with an ethnographic focus on the practices of care\, Bagnall-Munson also investigates the effect of the welfare state on the opportunities adults with disabilities have for autonomy and the types of support available to them. Their research is funded by the NSF Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement grant and research grants from Policy Research Associates. \nThis event is sponsored by the Department of Sociology at Columbia University.
