The Right Use of the Earth The Right Use of the Earth: International Conference on Knowledge, Power and Duties within a Finite Planet will be held in Paris May 29 – June 1, 2018. This is a joint conference of the Paris Sciences et Lettres Environmental Humanities Program and the New York University.
The Organizing Committee welcomes abstracts from academics as well as practitioners, including staff of adjudicatory institutions and international organizations. Deadline for submission is January 15, 2018. Submissions should include a 300-word abstract, short bibliography, and short author’s biography.
The conference will explore how views of the earth as a united and limited whole, and its right and sustainable use, have jointly been constituted as objects of knowledge and objects of government in the last centuries, and how these views today reshape societies as well as the academia.
Confirmed plenary keynote speakers include: Anna Tsing (Aarhus University Research on The Anthropocene), Katherine Richardson (University of Copenhagen), Erik Swyngedouw (University of Manchester), Jorge Viñuales (University of Cambridge), Alain Supiot (Collège de France) and Mireille Delmas-Marty (Collège de France).
The 4 key themes of the conference will be A History of Geopower from the 15th to the 21st Century; Governing a limited Earth / governing by limits; Only one Earth? The politics of scale in the construction of the environment; and “Planetarization” of Law? Legal concepts and normative process.
