Consuela Metzger, “Bound and Loose: An Evolution   of Record-Keeping Structures”

Please do join us on Monday, October 8, for the next meeting of the weekly Workshop in the History of Material Texts. We will convene, as usual, at 5:15pm in the Martin and Margy Meyerson Conference Room, which is located on the second floor of Van Pelt Library, diagonally across from the elevators.

This week, we welcome Consuela (Chela) Metzger, whose talk is entitled, “Bound and Loose: An Evolution of Record-Keeping Structures.” Metzger writes:

“Loose-leaf systems–the lowly three-ring binder is an example of one such “system”–are an American invention. The developers of loose-leaf systems described themselves as Business Systematizers and Methodizers, but earlier structures were systematic as well. In this seminar we will look at beautiful examples of early modern Italian ledgers, as well as examples of more modern record-keeping systems, both bound and loose-leaf. The implications of boundness and looseness these structures represent will be explored, along with the special challenges of describing and understanding the history of both personal and business record-keeping structures.”
