Change of Program: Overview

1. We have designed a set of protocols to help as many students as possible to be placed into the correct level.

2. The placement exam is an accurate tool to place you into our Language Program, so you must register for the level your score recommends and attend that class to get a better grasp of our classes at Columbia/Barnard.

3. During the first two weeks of classes, your instructor will also gauge your proficiency and she/he may suggest a change of level, which will have to be approved by the Director of the Language Program at Columbia or the Language Program Director at Barnard.

4. If you have not already done so, you must take the Placement Exam [(once per academic year (Columbia students click here; Barnard students click here)],
unless you have taken the previous course in the sequence at Columbia or Barnard.

  • Save a screen capture of the results, and submit a copy to your instructor.

5. If you have not already done so, download, fill out, and submit a copy of the Student Profile in class (click here to download the Student Profile Form).

6. Spots that may open in a full section are reserved for students on the instructor’s attendance list who have kept perfect attendance from the first day of class and who meet the enrollment criteria for the language requirement.

7. Instructors may start accepting students based on attendance on their own wait lists after the third class session.
