Enabling IMAP on LionMail/Gmail

To enable IMAP on LionMail/Gmail as requested by me, or for connecting to an external email program such as ThunderBird, Outlook, or Apple Mail, there are three steps to follow:

  1. Enable IMAP.
    1. Log into LionMail at http://lionmail.columbia.edu
    2. Click the gear icon in the top right hand corner and click “Settings”
    3. Click the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” tab
    4. Select the “Enable IMAP” radio button under IMAP access
    5. Save your changes with the button at the bottom of the page
  2. Step 2 is to allow less secure apps to connect to your email
    1. Click your image/icon/initial in the top right hand corner, and click “My Account”
    2. Under “Sign-in & security”, click “Connected apps & sites”
    3. Toggle the “Allow less secure apps” switch to ON
  3. Last step is to get your LionMail Device Password
    1. Login to the Device Password settings page
    2. Click “Create”
    3. Copy & save the automatically generated device password that appears on the next page (8-10 random characters.)
