Digital Publishing 101: How to Start a Scholarly Journal

February 7, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Interested in starting a new scholarly journal or bringing an existing publication into partnership with Columbia Libraries?

If there are few publishing opportunities for scholars in your field, if you want to learn more about the process of publishing, or if your existing publication would benefit from new editorial and technological tools, publishing an online, open access journal with the Libraries may be a great opportunity for your editorial team.

This introductory workshop will break down the journal publishing cycle, covering the essentials of the editor’s craft as well as practical publishing skills like peer review and production management, copyediting and typesetting, and marketing and preservation. Throughout, we’ll highlight how ethical publishing and a focus on diversity and inclusion in editorial practice produces high quality, innovative digital scholarship, and how Columbia Libraries support open access, academic-led scholarship with our journals publishing program.

If you’re interested in learning more about how you can partner with Columbia University Libraries or just curious about what it takes to run a successful scholarly publication, join us on Academic-Led Publishing Day to learn about starting a journal!
