Columbia University’s New CourseWorks system is now hosting OVER 1,200 Fall Term 2011 course sites! 

Our initial goals were to transition 800 courses to the new system for Fall term, which came from the move of the four medical center schools and Social Works, plus three Arts & Sciences departments.  

But the bigger jump came via early adopters (requests from instructors opting into New CourseWorks) ahead of their school or department’s planned transition term.  

 With another major transition on tap for the start of Spring Term 2012,  New CourseWorks will be hosting the majority of courses as we continue down our transition path to retire the existing CourseWorks system.

New CourseWorks@Columbia was successfully launched today.

A collaborative team of IT specialists and skilled users completed a major upgrade to New CourseWorks, Columbia University’s new learning management system.

Some of the key highlights of the upgrade include:

• New virtualized web servers to provide increased scalability and growth
• New load balancing tool to distribute users on available servers for greater performance
• New virtualized database servers to increase reliability and performance
• Migration from Solaris to Linux operating system to improve overall system speed
• Increased storage capacity

With these significant changes to the infrastructure that supports New CourseWorks, the team has created a strong foundation for a reliable and robust system. New CourseWorks is ready to meet the peak demands and expectations of the user community and support future growth of the system for years to come.
