SUMMARY:UNLOCKING POTENTIAL: EDUCATION IS THE KEY A CONVERSATION MODERATED BY ANGIE MARTINEZ
DESCRIPTION:Black and Latino men and women are the people most impacted by mass incarceration\, therefore as we celebrate Latino Heritage Month we want to use this platform to outline the various benefits of facilitating access to higher education for the people who have criminal justice involvement. The discussion will also seek to outline the consequences which arise when institutions of higher education ask formerly incarcerated individuals to disclose their justice involvement and the unforeseen collateral consequences on society. \nAdditionally\, this important discussion will draw on the wisdom of its diverse panelists\, to propose solutions in increasing access to higher education\, and to discuss current efforts to do so. \n\nOrganizer \nLeyla Martinez \nFormerly Incarcerated Student | Columbia University \nCouncil Member | National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls \n  \nPerformer \nMysonne Linen \nIndependent | Hip Hop Artist \n  \nModerator \nAngie Martinez (The Voice of New York) \nMultimedia Host | New York’s Power 105.1 \nAuthor | My Voice: A Memoir \n\nPanelists \nElias Alcantara \nSenior Associate Director | Office of Intergovernmental Affairs \nThe White House \n  \nMalika Saada Saar \nSenior Counsel | Civil and Human Rights \nGoogle Inc. \n  \nGeraldine Downey\, \nProfessor | Columbia University \nProgram Director | Center for Justice | Columbia University \n  \nJohnny Perez\, \nMental Health Safe Reentry Advocate | Mental Health Project Urban Justice Center \nFormerly Incarcerated Student | St. Francis College \n  \nAlan Rosenthal \nCriminal Defense | Civil Rights Attorney \nCenter for Community Alternatives \n\nFOLLOWED BY RECEPTION \nPlease click on the link below to see sponsors https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zO5xuJALy1EMEY34ToY0CEJZf1ePmTfMbuMUMzwRJLU/edit?usp=sharing
