SUMMARY:Transformative Justice Responses to Gender Based Violence
DESCRIPTION:with Nastassja Schmiedt and Lea Roth  \nApril 20th\n9:30am – 5:00pm\nColumbia School of Social Work \nJoin Nastassja Schmiedt and Lea Roth of Spring Up for a day long training on responding to gender based violence and building the foundations of consent culture with transformative justice. This is a practical skills-building training that walks through a step-by-step guide to designing and implementing transformative justice practices. \nTO REGISTER \nCOST: $75 per person\n*limited scholarships are available \ntjresponses.eventbrite.com \nNastassja (Stas) Schmiedt and Lea Roth are intersectional community organizers\, storytellers\, and healers based in Miami\, FL. They are the co-founders of Spring Up\, a social enterprise cultivating a culture of consent and liberty for all (timetospringup.org). The two have been part of the national conversation on solutions to rape culture since their student activist days at Dartmouth College\, where they filed a federal complaint against the institution alleging an underreporting of sexual assault and hate crimes on campus in 2013. \nAfter leaving school\, Stas & Lea traveled around the country doing trainings on campus violence and intersectional coalition building for students from over 50 universities and high schools. In 2015\, they published their book “Millennial Sex Education\,” offering an inclusive and eye opening window into youth sexual culture. They adapted their book into a curriculum for facilitating important conversations about consent\, gender\, sexuality\, race\, and power. Stas & Lea have consistently advocated for non-carceral cultural solutions to rape culture\, raising awareness of the dangers of mandatory reporting and minimum sentencing and explaining why many survivors do not turn to the legal or medical system for help. They have been doing restorative justice work with survivors of sexual / domestic violence\, couples addressing intimate partner violence\, as well as facilitating trainings on consent\, gender\, and power with justice-involved youth. The two are both trained circle keepers and reiki practitioners. They are active in community with South Florida-based organizations including Dream Defenders\, S.O.U.L. Sisters Leadership Collective\, Pridelines LGBTQ Youth Center\, and PARCEO. \nStas & Lea have given two TEDx talks: “Cultivating a Culture of Consent” and “The Millennial Mindset Can Save the World.” The engaged couple are published in the critically acclaimed anthology “We Believe You: Survivors of Campus Sexual Assault Speak Out\,” appeared in the documentary “The Hunting Ground” and on stage with Lady Gaga at the 2016 Oscars. They spoke about consent\, creativity\, and healing at the inaugural Mindful Relationships Summit in 2016\, and presented about “Bringing Transformative Justice to Campus” at Emory University’s 2018 RespectCon. Their writing on gender\, sexuality\, and sexual violence has been featured on Huffington Post\, Blavity\, and Feministing.
