SUMMARY:The Vera Institute of Justice Presents\, "Beyond Innocence: Toward a Framework for Serving All Survivors of Crime"
DESCRIPTION:“Beyond Innocence: Toward a Framework for Serving All Survivors of Crime”\nThursday\, October 8\, 2015\, 5:00 p.m. — 7:00 p.m.\nJohn Jay College of Criminal Justice\nNew Building\, 2nd Floor\, West End Student Dining Hall\n524 West 59th Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues) \nJoin us for a conversation exploring the challenges and barriers created by our national insistence that in order to deserve help\, victims should be “innocent\,” some intangible yet narrow notion of purity that our culture uses to assign value and\, most often\, recognize vulnerability. Whether we are talking about cultural barriers to accessing services or legal and administrative barriers prohibiting people from accessing compensation\, the framework of “innocence” has limited the ability of victim services to reach the full range of survivors of crime. This conversation will include service providers and advocates working in areas including sexual assault\, domestic violence\, young men of color\, LGBTQ survivors\, survivors engaged in sex work\, survivors of human trafficking\, and others in a rich dialogue about what is wrong and what could be different. \nPanel  \nMaureen Curtis\, Safe Horizon \nChanel Lopez\, Anti-Violence Project \nKate D’Adamo\, Sex Workers Project \nKenton Kirby\, Crown Heights Community Mediation Center \nDanielle Sered\, Common Justice (Moderator) \nRommell Washington\, Crime Victims’ Treatment Center\, St. Lukes & Roosevelt Hospitals \nPre-registration is required \nFor more information please contact David Hanbury at: dhanbury@vera.org \n \nCo-Sponsored by: The Social Justice Committee of the Advisory Council to the New York State Office of Victim Services and John Jay’s Center for Gender Studies
